Gen Z is the first generation to underperform their parents on such a notably wide scale academically. I think part of the problem isn’t just stuff like the rise of social media and smart tech but also the integration of technology into school systems. I don’t know if the solution is to go low-tech in school or if it’s to redo the education system entirely, but one sounds a lot easier than the other and would probably benefit a lot of those kids.

Not only a whole year of online learning which was useless but they missed over 2 months the year before. We had a teacher strike around here a yea or two before too, which they missed another 2 months when they ended school early. The few teenagers I know seem ridiculous behind what I remember.

I teach computer science at a college. I definitely see the difference in tbe students that were coming through grade school during the covid years. They definitely lack some of the math and writing skills that other students have but they are still curious and motivated. They are capable of learning advanced concepts but I still found that I needed to adjust my course because they were failed by the public school system.

I’ve worked with many K‑12 students through and after the pandemic. They did miss things: social skills, structure, foundational gaps. But they also gained: adaptability, tech fluency, emotional awareness, and a sharper sense of what good teaching looks like.

The key is what adults do now:
- Fill learning gaps intentionally, not by “rushing back to normal.”
- Teach focus, resilience, and digital discipline.
- Give them real-world projects and mentorship.

When supported well, this generation can be unusually resourceful, independent, and empathetic. I’m cautiously optimistic.
