Can you speak Spanish?

I wish.
A neighbor hired a Spanish teacher for her son and I took the lessons with him when we were very young. We learned some colors and how to count. We also learned a few phrases. I still remember all that I was taught at that age.

I took two semesters of Spanish in high school but didn't learn much.

I've been to Mexico many times and found that a lot of Mexicans speak some English, especially if you are polite and try to speak Spanish. And resorts can speak English for tourists.

My wife and I spent two weeks in San Miguel Allende and Guanajuato a couple years ago. We started trying to learn Spanish before we went but didn't make a lot of progress beyond some essential phrases. I'm pretty good at pronunciation and know more than my wife, but I know very little vocabulary. Mi español es muy malo.

When we got to San Miguel de Allende, we found that a lot of ex-pats live there and most people speak English. Guanajuato has tried to retain its Spanish culture, but the people were still super friendly and many could communicate with us, although I had to look up a few translations on my phone.

It cracks me up that American tourists in other countries expect those people to speak English. Yet many Americans are often critical of tourists or recent immigrants to this country who don't speak perfect English. I'm glad that nobody ever treated me that way when I was traveling.

It's pathetic for someone who is monolingual to put down someone who is bilingual but has an accent or isn't fluent.

Barely, it was mandatory class at middle and high school, that or German, but I didn't pay attention a lot. Later in time, I haven't found opportunities to practice.

Due to the proximity with my language, I could decipher simple Spanish text though, I suppose.

No. I live in the US. We speak English. Every person who I'll ever talk to also does. So I'm not wasting time learning anything else. The odds of someone who doesn't speak English having anything which can benefit me in any way are close to zero
