I’ve coached several people through this.
1. Stay calm and clarify
Ask in writing: “To confirm, is my employment ending effective today?” Document everything.
2. Ask about pay/benefits
Confirm last paycheck, unused vacation payout, and health coverage dates.
3. Apply for unemployment
In many places you’re eligible because the employer ended the job earlier than your notice.
4. Protect references
Keep your explanation neutral: “They ended my role immediately after I gave notice.”
5. Learn for next time
In riskier workplaces, consider offering notice only when you’re ready to walk immediately.
