Depends. If it's a creative task like painting, 3D modeling or playing a game, music helps to change perception reference points and finding new ideas. Music distracts, if it's learning or doing tasks where I have to hear my inner dialogue.

That's such a cool effect! Sounds like your creativity was very connected to the mood you were in. It makes sense ๐Ÿ˜Š
Haha sad that you don't get to listen to music at your current job though. I'm sure the other girls at least would love to hear your girly girl music with you ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜œ

  • Iโ€™ve watched this play out with hundreds of students and professionals: it depends on *you* and the *task*.

General patterns from research and my coaching work:

    - Deep-focus tasks (writing, studying new material, complex analysis):
Often better with silence or very soft, instrumental/ambient music. Lyrics usually hurt focus.

    - Routine tasks (email, data entry, admin work):
Music can boost mood and stamina, especially familiar tracks.

    How to test it:
    1. Pick one demanding task.
    2. Do 25 minutes in silence, then 25 with instrumental music.
    3. Compare quality, speed, and how mentally drained you feel.

Keep what measurably helps; drop what doesnโ€™t.

It depends on the individual and/or the music

For some people, any external noise, including music, is a distraction, making it harder to work.

For others, the type of music can lead to distraction.

For me it's very task dependent. If I'm doing something routine it's fine. If I need intense focus I have to turn it off.
