What other careers do software engineers pivot to if they don't want to work with AI?

I have to be real here. I have lost passion in software development. I don't want to be an AI agent manager/orchestrator. Development was more meaningful when I wrote code and had "ownership" in what was produced. It is now to the point where even grandma can produce apps and websites with AI.

Thing is, I don't have a degree. I don't even believe in college because it is a scheme. What was so great about SWE just a few years ago is that as long as you had the hard skillsets and a proven portfolio of work, you were golden. Anything creative/development-oriented is being consumed by AI and FAST.

AI is here to stay. The genie in the bottle has been opened and is not going back.

I thought about farming/agriculture, but I don't have the land. I can perhaps work with greenhouse growing, but I don't know if this is a truly sustainable/profitable career.

I am looking for options that are likely safe from AI automation.

1. You're too medically fucked to do farming and agriculture.

2. Farming and shit isn't profitable. One bad crop and you're bankrupt.

Stick with what you know, hay. And if you can't, find something you can realistically manage without risking your wife's future.

As long as you think that college is a" scheme" you will get exactly nowhere. A college degree is the passport to a fairly well-paying job in most cases and it is becoming more so.

It really depends on what it is. Many younger people who have graduated with bachelor's and even masters degrees are underemployed right now. Of course, a degree is required for most good healthcare roles, but I don't know if I would be good working in healthcare seeing my turbulent past and previous license disciplinary action.

Home services (maintenance, landscaping, cleaning), greenhouse/urban farming, specialty food, repair shops. Margins vary, but AI won’t fix a broken pipe or grow local produce.

4. Operations / logistics
Warehouse/process optimization, manufacturing operations, fleet/logistics coordination. Software helps, but humans handle constraints, negotiation, and chaos.

5. Regulated or trust‑intensive fields
Compliance, safety, quality assurance in manufacturing/food/healthcare; property management. Documentation and judgement matter more than code.

About farming/greenhouses:
Profitable paths tend to be niche: microgreens, specialty greens for restaurants, seedlings, CSA boxes, or agritourism. It’s a *business* first: distribution, customers, pricing. Many start part‑time with rented plots or shared greenhouses before going full‑time.

A simple way to explore without a degree:

- Shadow or volunteer: community gardens, local tradespeople, logistics companies.
- Try a short course/certificate: electrician pre‑apprenticeship, HVAC, supply‑chain, greenhouse management.
- Use your SWE brain as an edge: you can still use tech as a tool while not being “an AI orchestrator.”
