My favorite films

I’ve enjoyed a lot of films growing up but the latest ones just dont feel as great. Anyways, I’ve listed below a few of my favorite movies since most of you weren’t as familiar with them. Just skim the list and #FeelFreeToList the films you’d like to give a try.

DEADLY DISASTERS

I wanted to start this thing off with a blast, literally... 2012 (a 2009 film starring John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, and Chiwetal Ejiofol) brings an “End of the World” disaster, consisting of tsunamis, hot lava, earthquakes, etc. DAYLIGHT (a 1996 film starring Sylvester Stallone) has travelers trapped in an underground tunnel after an explosion causes it to collapse and flood. INTO THE STORM (a 2014 film starring Jeremy Sumpter and Nathan Kress) has storm chasers intending to film the creative new tornadoes in town.

THE IMPOSSIBLE (a 2012 film starring Tom Holland, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts) has a family looking to reunite and survive a Tsunami that hit Thailand. POSEIDON (a 2006 film starring Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss) is basically the sinking Titanic without all the Lovey Dovey shit. SAN ANDREAS (a 2015 film starring The Rock, Carla Gugino, and Alexandria Daddario) has a family fighting to survive after the collapse of the San Andreas fault.

ATTACK OF THE CYBORGS, CLONES, ALIENS, & UNDEAD

Action-packed Sci-Fi films are usually my go to when my grandpa comes over... 6TH DAY (a 2000 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a man looking to take back his life after he gets replaced by a clone. ALITA BATTLE ANGEL (2019) has cyborgs looking to off eachother. DOOM (a 2005 film starring The Rock and Karl Urban) and LIFE (a 2017 film starring Jake Gyllanhael and Ryan Reynolds) lures teams into space to battle an experiment gone wrong.

EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY (a 1988 film starring Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, and Damon Wayans) has a lonely woman falling in love with an alien accompanied by his goofy friends. THE FACULTY (a 1998 film starring Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett) has students snorting drugs as a way to expose the aliens that took over the school. THE MUMMY (a 2017 remake starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe) has a man on the run from an Egyptian Mummy and a bipolar Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde.

RESIDENT EVIL RETRIBUTION (a film 2012 starring Milla Jovovich) reunites the new live crew with the old and undead. SLITHER (a 2006 film starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker) teams up a clumsy cop with a neglected wife in taking down her parasite-infected husband. SPECIES 1 and 2 (1995/98) has seductive extraterrestrials looking to mate or kill those who refuse.

TERMINATOR GENISYS (a 2015 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke) sends the terminator back in time to save a young Sarah Connor. WORLD WAR Z (a 2013 film starring Brad Pitt) has a man in search of a cure to save the world from a zombie pandemic. ZOMBIELAND (a 2009 film starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone) teams up strangers looking to survive a zombie apocalypse.

OVERSIZED KILLER CREATURES

I also have a thing for these films even though I’m like extremely spooked by animals in real life... I mean, there’s sneaky snakes (ANACONDA HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID 2004), wicked werewolves (CURSED 2004), creepy crocs (CRAWL 2019 AND PRIMEVAL 2007), speedy sharks (DEEP BLUE SEA 1999, SHALLOWS 2016, AND SHARK NIGHT 2011), devious dinos (GODZILLA 1998, JURASSIC PARK 1993), killer whales (IN THE HEART OF THE SEA 2015), and all kinds of monsters (GREAT WALL 2016, JUMANJI 1995, KING KONG 2005, RAMPAGE 2018).

THE OBSESSED & THE UNHINGED

I blame my grandma for playing psycho Lifetime movies and other horrors... DR. GIGGLES (1992) has friends running from a maniac pretending to be a doctor and he ensures his patients never come back to life. ENOUGH (a 2002 film starring Jennifer Lopez) has a battered wife looking to fight back rather than continue running.

FEAR (a 1996 film starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg) has an obsessive boyfriend willing to kill anyone who interferes with his relationship. THE GOOD SON (a 1993 film starring Elijah Wood and Macauley Culkin) has a boy willing to kill for mommy’s attention. HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE (a 1992 film starring Ernie Hudson and Rebecca De Mornay) has a babysitter willing to kill to steal away her boss’s husband/children.

HAPPY DEATH DAY 2 U (2019)* sends a student back in time to stop a new killer. HOLLOW MAN (a 2000 film starring Josh Brolin and Kevin Bacon) leads a coworker to go invisible after an experiment gone wrong so he uses it to his bloody advantage. HOUSE OF WAX (a 2005 film starring Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray) sends a bunch of campers running from a knockoff Leatherface looking to turn them into wax models.

IDLE HANDS* (a 1999 film starring Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Jessica Alba, and Vivica Fox) has a teen battling his uncontrollable hand that desires to kill. JOY RIDE (a 2001 film starring Paul Walker and Steve Zahn) has two brothers on the ride of their lives after a joke gone wrong triggers a looney truckdriver. NO ONE LIVES (a 2012 film starring Luke Evans) has a psycho on the hunt for his escaped hostage.

PURGE ANARCHY (a 2014 film starring Frank Grillo) has a cop looking to avenge and survive on the night crime is legalized. READY OR NOT (2019) takes HideNSeek to a whole new level as in-laws intend to kill the bride. RETROACTIVE (a 1997 film starring Jim Belushi) uses time travel to save those at risk from a mad man. SANTA’S SLAY (a 2005 film starring Bill Goldberg) has a satanic claus looking to bring bloodshed on Christmas. SINGLE WHITE FEMALE (a 1992 film starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda) has an obsessive roommate looking to replace another.

SWIMFAN (a 2002 film starring Jesse Bradford) turns a wet, wild one night stand deathly wicked. TAMARA (a 2005 film starring Jenna Dewan) has a bullied teen get even with those who wronged her. TURISTAS (a 2006 film starring Josh Duhamel and Olivia Wilde) shows the not-so-sexy side of a fictionalized Brazil when tourists are hunted for their organs.

VALENTINE (a 2001 film starring Denise Richards and Katherine Heigl) brings a killer cupid amongst friends. WRONG TURN (a 2003 film starring Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington) leaves strangers stranded with cannibals after a traffic accident. YOU’RE NEXT (2011) has one woman fighting to save her future in-laws.

THIEVES IN THE NIGHT

This is more like the faves I’d watch with my friends and cousins... ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS (a 2002 film starring Ice Cube and Mike Epps) has frenemies in search of stolen diamonds and a missing lottery ticket. BABY DRIVER (a 2017 film starring Ansel Elgort and Jamie Foxx) hits the road after a heist gone wrong.

BLUE STREAK (a 1999 film starring Martin Lawrence and Luke Wilson) has a con-man pretending to be a cop in order to retrieve his stash from a police station. FRIDAYY AFTER NEXT (a 2002 film starring Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Terry Crews and Kat Williams) has clumsy rent-a-cop cousins looking to catch the Santa Claus who robbed the hood.

FAST FIVE (a 2011 film starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) pulls together the team to pull off a heist in Brazil. HOBBS & SHAW (a 2019 film starring The Rock, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba) has frenemies team up to take down an enhanced soldier. TAKERS (a 2010 film starring Paul Walker, Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, Chris Brown, TI, and Hayden Christensen) has a cop looking to take down the crew pulling heists.

SEARCH, SUSPENSE & RESCUE

These mystery faves of mine are more up my mom’s alley. ALONG CAME A SPIDER (a 2001 film starring Morgan Freeman), CRADLE 2 DA GRAVE (a 2003 film starring DMX, Gabrielle Union, and Jet Li), COMMANDO (a 1985 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger), KIDNAP (a 2017 film starring Halle Berry), and TRANSPORTER 2 (a 2005 film starring Jason Statham) are all action-packed rescue missions to retrieve a kidnapped child.

DOUBLE JEOPARDY (a 1999 film starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones) and FLIGHT PLAN (a 2005 film starring Jodie Foster) both focus on a mom being framed and looking to prove her innocence and retrieve her missing child.

WHISPER (a 2007 film starring Josh Holloway) has a sinister child looking to get revenge on his kidnappers. BABYS DAY OUT (1994) is like 3 Stooges meets Home Alone as a baby brings serious pain to its kidnappers. DONT BREATHE (a 2016 film starring Stephen Lang and Dylan Minnette) has a blind yet highly skilled ex soldier looking to get revenge on the thieves attempting to rob him.

LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (a 2009 film starring Sara Paxton and Tony Goldwyn), RIVERWILD (a 1994 film starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon), and TRAPPED (a 2002 film starring Charlize Theron, Kevin Bacon, and Dakota Fanning) have parents looking to get revenge on those holding their family hostage.

IN THE BLOOD (a 2016 film starring Gina Carano) and THE MARINE (a 2006 film starring John Cena) both have spouses looking to kick the ass of those who hold their spouse hostage. 8 HEADS IN A DUFFLEBAG (1997) has a hitman looking to get revenge after a luggage mixup at the airport.

BELKO EXPERIMENT (a 2016 film starring Tony Goldwyn) brings battle royale to the office when employees learn that only one may survive. DIE HARD (1988) and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (2007) both have a cop looking to take down terrorists. SPEED 2 (a 1997 film starring Sandra Bullock and Willem Defoe) has a wronged employee hold members of a ship hostage.

MAN IN THE IRON MASK (a 1998 film starring Leonardo Dicaprio, John Malkovich, and Jeremy Irons) takes “Prince and the Pauper” to a new level as the 3 Musketeers kidnap an arrogant Prince and replace him with a Pauper. MISS BALA (a 2019 film starring Gina Rodriguez) teams up a tourist with the cartel in attempt to rescue her kidnapped friend.

MOTHERS DAY (a 2012 film starring Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, and Frank Grillo) has a deranged family hold the new owners of their home hostage until they recover their stash. VANISHING (a 1993 film starring Kiefer Sutherland, Beau Bridges and Sandra Bullock) has a man agreeing to be taken hostage in hopes of reuniting with his kidnapped girlfriend.

THE THRILL OF THE CHASE

I absolutely love films like this where they try to escape those after them. It’s much better than ongoing films where the killer never dies... BIRD ON A WIRE (a 1990 film starring Goldie Hawn and Mel Gibson) has an ex-couple on the run after witness protection fails. EAGLE EYE (a 2008 film starring Shia Lebouf) and JEXI (2019) reveal just how killer technology can be.

ENEMY OF THE STATE (a 1998 film starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman), THE FUGITIVE (a 1993 film starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones) and its sequel US MARSHALS (a 1998 film starring Wesley Snipes, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr) all have framed men on the run while looking to prove their innocence.

HANNA (a 2011 film starring Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana) turns the tables when its the assassins on the the run. THE HITCHER (a 2007 film starring Sean Bean and Sophia Bush) has a deranged hitchhiker stalking a couple. THE HUNT (a 2020 film starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank) and SURVIVING THE GAME (a 1994 starring Ice T, Gary Busey, and Charles S Dutton), and PREDATORS (a 2010 film starring Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne) all bring about a revamped version of “The Most Dangerous Game” as humans are hunted for sport.

KILL BILL (a 2003 film starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, and David Carradine) and LAW ABIDING CITIZEN (a 2009 film starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx) have spouses looking to hunt down those who attempted to kill them. MAD MAX FURY ROAD (a 2015 starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy) has captives looking to escape the wasteland.

NO ESCAPE (a 2015 starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan) has a man fighting to get his family home after an overseas riot breaks out. OUT OF TIME (a 2003 film starring Denzel Washington, Sanaa Lathan and Eva Mendes) has a cop racing to cover up his affair with the recently deceased.

PERFECT GETAWAY (a 2009 film starring Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant, and Steve Zahn) has couples trying to figure out which of them are serial killers. PREMIUM RUSH (a 2012 film starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Dania Ramirez, and Michael Shannon) has cyclers being chased by a crooked cop. RED EYE (a 2005 film starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy) has a clerk trying to stop the terrorist plot that will occur at her hotel.

RUNNING SCARED (a 2006 film starring Paul Walker and Vera Farmiga) has a man on the run while attempting to save his neighbors child. SAFE (a 2012 film starring Jason Statham) has a cage fighter battling the criminals after a young girl.TAG (a 2018 film starring Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner) gives a new meaning to “child’s play” as adults start to take the game too seriously.

TRIPPIN ME OUT

I’ve always wanted to take a roadtrip, something much more interesting than a trip to Atlanta. Oh well, I’ll continue to live through these movies... BAD GRANDPA (a 2013 film starring Johnny Knoxville) leaves a child with his grandpa after one neglectful parent asks for him to be transported across the country to the other.

DUE DATE (a 2010 film starring Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis) leaves a soon-to-be father on a ride along with the annoyance responsible for getting them kicked off the plane. HAROLD & KUMAR ESCAPE GUANTANAMO BAY (a 2008 film starring Kal Penn, John Cho, Paula Garces, Neil Patrick Harris) has the stoners fleeing after a stunt leaves them accused of being terrorists.

JOHNSON FAMILY VACATION (a 2004 film starring Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey) is about a dysfunctional family on an eccentric roadtrip to a family reunion. LEMONY SNICKETS A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS (a 2004 film starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, Emily Browning) has 3 orphans looking to escape a looney relative whos after their inheritance.

WITHOUT A PADDLE (a 2004 film starring Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Dax Shepard) is like if the American Pie cast went camping in the wilderness. VACATION (a 2015 remake; starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate) is a wacky family adventure on the way to a theme park.

PARODIES & PURE COMEDY

Laughter is everything and since I’m a goofy mf, these faves are all I need... THE COMEBACKS (a 2007 film starring David Koechner and Matthew Lawrence) has a coach trains a football team full of klutz. DATE MOVIE (a 2006 film starring Alyson Hannigan and Eddie Griffin) mimics Meet the Fockers, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Hitch, and many more.

DATE NIGHT (a 2010 film starring Tina Fey and Steve Carrell) turns hilariously deadly after a bored married couple steals another’s restaurant reservations. EPIC MOVIE (a 2007 film starring Kal Penn and Carmen Elektra) mimics the Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Carribean, The Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter, Xmen and more. LIAR LIAR (a 1997 film starring Jim Carrey and Cary Elwes) leaves a lawyer incapable of lying.

SCARY MOVIE 1 (a 2000 film starring Anna Faris and the Wayan Bros) mimics Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. SCARY MOVIE 2 (a 2001 film starring Anna Faris and the Wayan Bros) mimics The Haunting, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Amityville Horror, and many more. SCARY MOVIE 4 (a 2006 film starring Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Kevin Hart) mimics The Grudge, Saw, and War of the Worlds.

TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL (2010) is like Cabin in the Woods but the teens mistake two hillbillies for murderers. A VERY BRADY SEQUEL (a 1996 film starring Shelly Long and Christine Taylor) sends the knockoff Brady family spiraling after a man cons them into believing he's Mrs Brady’s long lost first husband. WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS (a 2008 film starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher) leaves a drunk one night stand tying the knot and unwilling to split their casino winnings.

ANIMATIONS AND MUSICALS

I’m not big on cartoons, but I have a few faves and I like a couple of musicals too. You may not be as familiar with these— A CAT IN PARIS (2010) where a cat teams up with a cat burgular to save a catnapped girl. GOOD DINOSAUR (2015) is like Lion King meets Croods but with dinos. GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (1998) is heartbreaking as orphans look to survive the aftermath of a war.

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (2016) has a boy fighting to survive after releasing a vengeful spirit. OSMOSIS JONES (a 2001 film starring Chris Rock and Bill Murray) has a white blood cell teaming up with a pill to fight off the bad germs that have infected a hosts body. SINBAD LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS (a 2003 film starring Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones) battles monsters in attempt to retrieve a powerful book.

I’m sure you’re more familiar with a few of my other faves— ALADDIN (both the 1992 Animated and 2019 Live), CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (1968; starring DickVan Dyke), LITTLE MERMAID (1989), TARZAN (1999), HAPPY FEET (2006), SHREK THE THIRD (2007; Mike Myers), SPIRITED AWAY (2001) and TREASURE PLANET (2002).

WITCHES, WARLOCKS, & THE WISE

I’ve got a few fantasies and magic tricks up my sleeve with these faves—
THE COVENANT (a 2006 film starring Sebastian Stan and Taylor Kitsch) where warlocks battle the newcomer who wants all the power to himself. DARK TOWER (a 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey) brings a Gunslinger to a parallel universe to save a boy from the Man in Black.

THE FRIGHTENERS (a 1996 film starring Michael J Fox) has a ghost hunter battling the spirit of a serial killer. IMAGINARIUM OF DR PARNASSUS (a 2009 film starring Heath Ledger, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, Andrew Garfield and Christopher Plummer) is a game of good vs evil to see who scores the most souls. TOMORROWLAND (a 2015 film starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson) sends an inventor and tech-saavy teen to a new dimension.

I’m sure you already know these faves— CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (2005), HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (2004), HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005), PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS THE LIGHTENING THIEF (2010), THE SORCERERS APPRENTICE (2010), AND VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF 1000 PLANETS (2017).

SUPERHEROES, SPIES & ALLIES

I saved the most familiar for last and can honestly say I enjoyed a few Marvel movies like AMAZING SPIDERMAN (2012), AVENGERS ENDGAME (2019), CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR (2016), DOCTOR STRANGE (2016), FANTASTIC FOUR SILVER SURFER (2007), INCREDIBLE HULK (2008), THE PUNISHER (2004), SHANG CHI LEGEND OF THE 10 RINGS (2021), SPIDERMAN 3 (2007), SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME (2021), XMEN APOCALYPSE (2016), and XMEN ORIGINS WOLVERINE (2009).

I also liked a few other films that I think contains heroes of some sort like BUMBLEBEE (2018), CATWOMAN (2004), DARK KNIGHT (2008), INCREDIBLES (2004), JUSTICE LEAGUE (2017), KINGSMAN SECRET SERVICE (2014), MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 (2006), MORTAL KOMBAT (2021), MY SUPER EX GIRLFRIEND (2006), PETER PAN (2003), POWER RANGERS (2017), ROBIN HOOD MEN IN TIGHTS (1993), RUSH HOUR 3 (2007), SHAZAM (2019), SCOOBY DOO (2002), SKYFALL (2012), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2020), THIS MEANS WAR (2012), ULTRAVIOLET, (2006), and UNDERCOVER BROTHER (2002)
