June 6th, 1944: Operation Overlord

Hi folks. Today is June 6th. It's the 78th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.

For those who don't know what that is, On this day in 1944 American, British, and Canadian forces launched the invasion of Nazi occupied Europe. It was a victory for the Allies but one of significant cost. Without this event, the Western world would resemble something far darker and troubled than it does today.

As you carry on with your business today, contemplating your sexuality, wondering what bathroom to use, wondering if that boy a few desks over likes you or not, deciding whether to buy the name brand or the Walmart brand, just take a few moments and be appreciative that these are your biggest concerns at the moment. Because the alternative would have been much less pleasant.

I met a man a decade or so ago whose friend was at D-Day. Apparently, the friend woke up one morning and looked out to see the sea covered in ships.

It's not something that often comes up in conversation, though.

I need to know some good locations in normandy to visit... got any?

I don't, unfortunately. I've never been there.

My grandfather was an aide for General Mark Clark and I still can remember some of the stories he would tell about the war and his time in Italy

To think we were well on our way to losing that war until Normandy.
