Is Vanessa Ives insanity metaphor for real mental illness?

Spoiler Alert!
Vanessa Ives in penny dreadful is a witch who gets possessed by demons (like the devil) and therefor behaves like an insane person. She later on gets sent to a mental asylum. I don't know why she gets possessed, what the thing with satan is about and why it wants to attack her.

I'm wondering if it's "real" and really happening in the show or if it's support to symbolize real life mental illness. Also wondering if Vanessa is a human or just a witch since she doesn't always use magic. #PennyDreadful #TvShow #Mentalillness

I am a witch. I also have mental illness, but I also "feel" emotions that are not connected to me. Its a very hard question to answer. Sometimes I can enter into places, as in houses, establishments, etc... I can be in a perfectly happy or whatever mood, mayhaveyou, and my demeanor can change unexpectedly. I can withdraw myself from those places and feel perfectly normal again. Spirits and other entities can have an effect on behavioral patterns. The big difference between a spirit/ghost and other beings is that a spirit /ghost was once a human... Therefore the energy that its feeling may be leaked upon u and this world... U may feel sad, happy, giddy, energized etc.. For reasons that u are unable to explain. Most of the time, they are harmless & just don't realize their projections or are requesting help. Shadow figures, or dark beings have never been human and they can also make u feel intense feelings that u don't understand or cannot control... They can harm or make u harm others.. As in full outright possession.. I really haven't a clue but I do know that they will and can cause u physical harm.
