He had to fulfill a ritual to reach that immortality and Kakuzu had to wait for from time to time. So it is not an impromptu act but a vary diligent and mentally counshes effort for "survival?" or more accurately immortality. So childish is not really applicable for this case.
There is too much premeditation and consistent effort to say a childish defense for the actions of Hidan.

He wasn't childish cause a child doesn't enjoy pain and doesn't love murdering someone.
He was a textbook psychopath and sadist. He followed some stupid religion which required him to kill people, although the ritual gave him immortality.
I absolutely hated him for killing Asuma.
And it was a perfect moment when Shikamaru defeated him. The guy was utterly humiliated and crushed by Shikamaru.
Oh God lol we had this theory that someone hit him hard on the head, but he survived because of his immortality. This however left him mentally handicapped for eternity since his partner could not stitch his brains.
