Timothy was the guy who was too scared to help his squad in battle and only killed one person when he surrendered.

Be careful. In this movie young Timothy is meant as a vehicle for the audience to experience what it was like and feel scared at real war. So by labeling him a coward you judge most who watch the movie as cowards. Inexperienced would be a better label as he hadn’t yet been trained like others in the group.

No. You have to remember he was effectively a non-combatant. He was brought along to translate languages and carry gear.

He'd only ever fired his gun in basic training, and was involved in zero combat in his time with the squad. It was well within his character to be paralyzed with fear when the time came for him to actually get involved.

And still to this day, that knife scene is always so hard to watch.
