Why are boxers allow to reject a fight they know they're going to lose?

I always thought that one of the main purpose of a sport is to accept every challenge that gets thrown at you whether you know you will lose or not, otherwise the sport will lose its meaning. but it doesn't seem like this is the case with boxing.

Floyd Mayweather is a prime example of this. he currently holds the best boxing record right now because he's won 50 fights and has not lost one. but this is obviously because he pretty much picked all of these fights himself, he never accepted a fight that he knew he was gonna lose at. most of the boxers he fought were way below his league and the reason why he was able to beat the bigger guys like Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya was because he refused to fight them when they were at their prime.

so again I always wondered why is boxing, not the sport itself but the franchise has to be such a joke like this? if all athletes were able to reject a challenge they know they were going to lose then wouldn't this take away the meaning of the sport and have the athletes get things their way all the time?
