Ravenous, VVitch, Hereditary (sorta), Midsommar, Day of the Dead, Braindead, Re-Animator, Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, Alien, Apostle (2018), The Fly (1986), eXistenZ, The Possessor, Cheap Thrills, The Collector/Collection (like more than Saw), The Head Hunter, Mandy (2018), Beyond the Black Rainbow (boring but it gave me weird dreams), Cosmopolis (horror film in my book and gave me weird dreams/thoughts), Jughead, etc.
I don't know if I care about the distinction between modern and classic. One thing is that I don't care for the overly paranormal or supernatural types like Exorcist or The Amityville Horror. I'm more into, say, zombies and aliens and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I can't understand the rules to know how much to worry about or not for the characters when there are demons and ghosts and such involved. It starts to feel like the writers are just inventing the rules to me as they go along.

By favourite horror, do you mean a movie I would rewatch over and over, or a horror that scared me good?
For me a movie is only horror if the source of the horror cannot be defeated by a well-placed shot to the head. Thus slasher movies aren't horror to me.
That being said, the two horror movies that tie for my favourite are: "The Ring" and "The Grudge".
I can't watch horror movies anymore, but I liked the Poltergeist series. The scariest of all for me was Evil Dead II.

The saw series, wrong turn, gravedancers and a not so very well known French movie called martyrs. I have a lot of favorites that I can't think of off the top of my head at the moment, but for found footage, grave encounters is one that comes to mind.
I like the old style of building suspense, as opposed to the modern trend of jumpscares. However, the old horror movies had absolutely terrible acting.
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was really scary to me.
There was a series on TV called The Strain that was also scary.Silent Hill. Nothing alike the games but 100% a perfect film within it's own right.
We don't talk about the 2nd film though.Hellraiser has always been a personal favorite of mine.
That said I love horror of all eras, doesn't matter the decade, there's always good stuffClassic horror and those signs are the ones usually on the back of a tractor trailer
Halloween, Friday the 13th, Scream, Texas Chainsaw massacre, The Conjuring, Witch...
