Whats so great about the tv show The Office?

I liked Friends as a kid but rewatching it as an adult and understanding more of whats going on, I’m not a big fan. I can't believe i used to root for Ross and Rachel over Monica and Chandler. Anyways, I've started watching Abbott Elementary and i kinda like it. I heard its similar to The Office and Parks and Recreation so i was considering watching both. I've watched the first season and the first half of the second season but I dont think i can continue. I like Steve Carrells movies but his character Michael is so fckin cringey to me. He goes too far with the stereotyping like Richard Pryor and Amy Schumer in standup. I wanted to see Jim and Pam’s relationship grow but i get tired of how they pick on Dwight. I actually like dwight and find his OcD and work ethic relatable. Oddly enough, i find Ryan kinda cute. And Stanley is dull af but he makes me laugh. Still, i dont think i can continue with Michaels bullshit if his character doesn't improve. So yea, to those who watch, I honest want to know, whats so great about this show? #FeelFreeToList #TheOffice

So i kept watching. Michael did ease up a bit in the other seasons. I hope he gets with Holly cause Jan makes my head hurt. Today im starting season 5 on tv. Its killing my dvr tho because they play annew season daily on Comedy Central lol. I hope its better than season 4 because it got kinda boring once Pam and Jim no longer had to chase eachother. Dwight and Angela are a funnier duo to watch then them. I sing goofy a lot like Michael and Andy no matter where i go so i can relate to that part

I think it's a show for people who have a sarcastic or dry sense of humour.
The characters are meant to be so extreme that it's funny. Like how Kelly Kapoor is supposed to be so obsessed with celebrities and Ryan, that there's nothing else to her.
They're all one dimensional characters.
Meredith will always be drunk and slutty, Kevin will always be dumb, Stanley will always be annoyed and wanting to leave, Michael will always have delusions of grandeur and struggle to have friends, Dwight will always be a guy with the mentality of a teenager obsessed with martial arts and weapons.
Jim and Pam are meant to be the normal ones reacting to the characters around them.
At it's core the Office is just a love story that goes on forever.
It's popular because the episodes were well written, is funny and it kind of takes you into the world of Dunder Mifflin.

Yea its full of dry humor and sarcasm and stereotypes. I prefer light hearted humor and lots of goofy corniness. But not cringe. I haven't seen the well written part but i dont think i’ll stick around to. Thank you for the description

I find with the office people either love it and are completely addicted to it, or they just don't get anything out of it. It strikes a chord with certain types.
There's big fan groups that still watch that series over and over, they quote every line.
I understand the Office, but I don't get why people obsess about Star Wars and stuff like that.
I tried to watch Star Wars and I always fall asleep before anything happens. 😅

You may find later on in the series it kinda gets worse because there was so many seasons, and a few cast changes. Just depends what you like.

I have a weird fascination with Kelly and Ryan's messed up relationship most of the time, I always wanted to see more of those two.
Another weird fact- Kelly (Mindy Kaling) and Ryan (DJ Novack) don't just play crazy Kelly and Ryan, they're actually two of the main writers and producers of the Office. They're responsible for writing a lot of episodes, they're awesome!!

Yea i didn't like the fake proposal because if it was real, she was constantly expecting it. I found Ryan cute the first two seasons but i disliked him season 3+. he's really mean to her and should just let her know he's not interested longterm. I heard they dated irl for a while as well. My fave couple is dwight and Angela but on this season she's cheating on andy with dwight. I dont like the cheating

Andy is weird and his character kinda gets more and more annoying throughout the series.
Yeah it's weird because it's Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak writing the relationship between Kelly and Ryan.
They also purposely put Kelly and Ryans desks out of sight from the main office so that, they could leave and be writing more episodes while they were shooting all the Jim and Pam, Dwight, Michael stuff. Sorry I don't wanna give you too much background info and ruin the experience.
It's just that I've watched all the seasons with the commentary from the cast, and all the extra features etc. I know too much about the Office. 😅

Wow i kept wondering why they hardly showed those two. Tbh, kelly is the most annoying in the office so not seeing her didn't bother me lmao. I just dont get how people hate dwight. he's my fave. Angela and Ryan are mean. Michael still says dumbshit but when he's not, he and andy bring the comedy. Kevin just creeps me out. Toby is so fckin dull i want to cry when i see his scenes. Stanleys laugh is the only thing i like about him. Otherwise he's mean too. Jims facial expressions are the only thing i like about him. Pam is relatable with her relationships but she's so dry it hurts. Holly is amazing. Thank goodness Jan hardly gets screentime. Meredith has her funny moments. I just feel bad for phyllis lmao. People are mean to her for no reason. Whats the guys name who works un the basement with Roy. he's from Hot Tub Time Machine and he's kinda funny. Lmao im 5 seasons in and still struggle to remember these peoples names. There's so many characters, Oscar is one of the more normal of the quirky ones.
I used to get a kick out of Meredith, and her not wearing underwear to casual Fridays, or taking off her top and exposing herself to Michael at the Office party. She's a wild one. 😅
Phyllis takes a lot of crap from Michael and Dwight.
Yes, Michael was trying to be the father of that baby for a while even though he wasn't.
Steve Carell is respected for the Office because he had to play such an obnoxious, pathetic, self-obsorbed character, but in real life he seems very normal. I think a lot of people feel he's very talented, especially paired up with Rainn Wilson (Dwight). They're quite the comedy duo.

Yeah he plays a very polarizing character.
I hear what you're saying, and there's definitely times where it can be cringy. I'm embarrassed for michael at times. The Office is such a weird dynamic that I wonder if he isn't meant to be a useless jackass, so that other characters like Jim, Pam, Stanley, Darryl etc. can be more lovable and relatable. They're the heroes of the show basically, you know what I mean? It's like how most people hate their boss in real life and it gets to a point where the underlings are basically doing everything.
The Office is just an exaggeration of that. Luckily Steve is creative enough that Michael manages to get laughs despite constantly being the butt of the jokes.
Who would think a sitcom could be so complicated, huh?
I do think The Office is one of the best comedic shows ever made, but I really don't watch it anymore because the characters are very one dimensional, exaggerated, and even idealistc in the case of Jim and Pam. It's a funny show, but not to taken too seriously.
There's seriously people on those facebook fan sites who don't understand that Jim and Pam don't exist. 😅
They make posts talking about how they want to find their Jim, they want a love like Jim and Pam, they get sad if anyone doesn't like them. They need to understand that those are all actors, and they're all married to other people. Some of them have kids and are nothing like the characters.
The Office is just a fantasy.

Yeah I think he does some stupid impression of Chris Rock's comedy special because he's in a course about racial sensitivity that I think Larry Wilmore was conducting.
Larry Wilmore is a Black man who was also a writer on the show at that time.
They probably felt they could be more offensive because the scene was possibly written by Larry Wilmore and it involved him? Just a theory, but yeah, they wanted Michael to be ridiculously offensive and ridiculously stupid. They probably could've skipped some of the racial stereotypes in that series, I don't think it added that much to the show. Obviously it can be offensive even if it was meant to show Michael as an idiot.

The whole cast looks uncomfortable during michaels stereotypical scenes. So yea i dont think it added anything to the show no matter if someone black wrote it or not. As for Roy, i like him but not in season 1 and 2. He paid her no attention. He was better in season 3 but he has anger issues so i definitely dont see him as the innocent sweet guy Jamie. Roy wouldve been fitting for Angela had she not been dating Andy or Dwight.

I'm not sure. I do remember the scene you're talking about, but which episode I can't remember.
In the Christmas one I'm referring to it's where Pam and Karen first start to get along.
Karen got bullied in Angela's party planning meeting, so Pam decided to console her, and they joined forces against Angela. I think it might have been the one where Michael brought the 2 Asian waitresses back and he couldn't remember which one he was into because they look the same (Another racist stereotype that probably could've been left out).

For me, personally, I’ve worked for two different Michael Scotts and about 20 Todd Packers. I haven’t worked with a Dwight but that’s probably because I’m more like him. But what I liked about the pranks they played on Dwight was how petty the pranks were but he could never just laugh at himself and always took himself way too seriously. Even if those pranks were played on me I would at least give them credits for coming up with it.

I've watched the series a couple of times, and I don't want to spoil it, but the final episodes are one of the best there is.

It's because it's more real, still, with these dumb characters, some you think are annoying, some amazing, but they all show so much human character because nobody is perfect and you see how they get vulnerable and personal, real and how they grow through the show.

And there's also the aspect that it's easy to watch. Just like sitcoms like Big Bang Theory, Friends, HIMYM, New Girl, etc.
Although they're not the same, it's just... more down to earth.

I liked it because Carell's character was this well-known-to-most try hard who constantly made a fool of himself trying to be popular, always saying the wrong thing. He was a good example of what not to be as a leader, I remember that one scene were a hot girl visiting mentions she likes coffee and so he goes out and buys an entire espresso machine and acts obsessed with coffee. Not to mention his shenanigans on "inclusivity day". Dwight had quite a few fun moments too, but pam and jim were dry and overrated characters. But yeah, I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites but it was fun enough for me to watch.

I hated The Office for its first season but then I began to notice the depth of the show and I really loved it after that.

I was not able to stand Friends for even 5 minutes. I am sorry but I hate that show to the core.
If you remove the music, the show is completely mental. That is what I think. Two and a half men seems more sensible to me than FRIENDS.

After the first season, the cringe gets much lighter and Michael becomes much more likeable.
The first season is hard to get through, especially the episode with racial/ethnic stereotypes, I had to pause that shit multiple times.

I like the show because of Dwight and Angela and some other characters.
It's the only show I've watched three times.
But yeah, Jim is kind of a dick, later he becomes a nicer guy.

Lol, Creed is gold.
His whole story is one wild ride all the way to the end of the show.

He wasn't even supposed to be a character, Creed Bratton (the actor) was supposed to be an extra without lines but he sneaked into a scene with Phyllis and improvised a conversation without anyone noticing, they shot it and then they had to pay him extra for having a speaking role lmao.

That's how his backstory originated, that he walked into Dunder Mifflin one day and pretends to work there lol.
And since then Creed Bratton just played a wacky version of himself.

Office has a very particular style of comedy that I'm not very fond of. If I had to choose between The Office and Friends , I'd go for Friends because Friends is funny most of the times. The Office feels a lot more cringey than some of the shows it used to compete with. So I don't find anything great about that show ,

I don't know. I don't normally even watch shows like this but watched all of it 4 times a row. Literally right after the last episode I started it all over again because I was so sad it ended. Took a few months break and now going fifth time and it feels fresh again.

The first season of The Office is boring I always skip it. Michael’s character is cringey but he’s like the baby of the show and it’s part of what makes him likable. Michael has redeeming qualities to him too. He’s loyal to people and puts relationships before money or personal gain. Dwight is hilarious. Stanley is funny too.

Exactly, character development pays off trust me. It's why it's one of my favorites and an impressive feat of comedy. Which then brought us Parks and Rec which though I've not seen, looks like it follows a more parody to the Office while making it's own intriguing group to follow as we witness the birth of Starlord.

It's true, that's kind of the premise of it.
Just like Superstore or Cheers or other shows like that. People who work in Offices definitely relate to the Office. I used to work in a School and some of the staff meetings reminded me of their conference room meetings on the Office. There was always one teacher who loved to talk too much and blab on and on like Michael. Everyone else just wanted to get out of there.

Yeah Cheers was another popular show in the 80's about a normal workplace/pub, basically full of crazy characters. It's kind of dated now.
The weird thing about the Office is that it wasn't that popular when it was originally on television.
Like a decade later after it was over, people started binge watching the series they really got into it.
