Does anyone know why some marvel mutants look like humans and others look like aliens, apocalypse, night crawler, and raven for example?

I just recently got into the X-men franchise, I never really got into it because I liked the MCU much better but I was just thinking about this earlier while watching X-men 2

Maybe to help distinguish the characters better and throw in some variety. It's difficult to draw a large number of human characters and distinguish them clearly in an economical way as needed for a comic book.

Especially if the original comic books are black and white, there's only so much variation we can add to very human-looking characters with very human-style proportions before they start to look alike and become difficult to distinguish from one another.

It's also more fun to draw such a variety sometimes and really play with things like proportions and skin texture and so forth beyond the normal human canons. Can set up more epic frames as far as composition with a hulking figure, or a super lean and elongated one, one that resembles a certain animal, etc.

I think that's the "meta-reason". Of course, such character designs will typically be accompanied by some background to explain why they look so unlike ordinary humans.

It may depend on whether the creator for each was sober, or under the influence of something. Just a guess.

Because some mutants have physical mutations and others their mutations are strictly on the inside
