What is your favorite SI FI movie new or old there are so old ones I like?

I'm a Sci Fi fan because of thoughtful, intelligent and inspiring stories.
If I like a s/f movie, then because I have read -and enjoyed- the related book;
''effects'' are interesting sometimes, but not so important to me.

The best stories I can think of seldom were made into a ''successful'' movie :)
There is not one favourite for me, but several ''dear'' ones:
''Dark Star'' , ''I am legend'', ''Soylent Green'' , ''Charlie'' (Flowers for Algernon), ''Ender's Game'' count for quite neat productions to me. ''Westworld'' ... too 'American' to me, but basically well enough done. ''A Clockwork Orange'' is a masterpiece - perhaps #1 on my list.
I found ''Total Recall'' and ''5th Element'' basically exciting - but too focused on the image of the main actor.
''Avatar'' could have been good - but they stole too many details from other -better- stories.
The ''movie industry'' focusses on stereotypical garbage for the untalented masses.
Such as Star Trek (not the original of course) or ''Star Wars''. ''Good'' s/f stories don't make enough money.

Don't know is someone ever tried, but I'd love to see a movie interpretation of:
- ''Mimsy were the Borogoves"
- ''The Game Players of Zan''
- ''A Canticle for Leibowitz''

I like the ones that make you think it could happen and what would you do like final countdown an
a modern-day aircraft carrier stuck in a time warp and put back to pearl harbor in 1941 December the 7th

Weeeeellll:
Pearl Harbour, the killing of Kennedy, NY trade centre attack and such are very ''American'' topics.
Dealing with this kind of ''national trauma'' certainly is a thing for those who are related to it.
To us others it's not THAT interesting, I'm afraid.
Movies like that are rather 'action spectacles with a twist' than 'deep' science fiction' in my eyes.
I don't see the -emm- philosophical or intellectual message that usually comes along with ''good'' s/f.

I think that there's a big gap between Asimov and Disney :)

The jest of the movie was what should they do they were not of the time but still were a usa war ship and they had to protect the country but how would they start a war or interfere with the future but the time storm cane back and put them back in the right time but the whole thing is based on what would you do

That's 'valid' for me: ''what would you do'' is the basis of sci fi, in a way.
But as I said: my own preference in the genre is not focused on the U. S. and so the topic does not touch ME.

I like tremors movies for fun SI FI then hellraiser for spook factor and old ones like the first war of the worlds and forbidden planet

I've only watched the first tremors movie and seen bits and pieces of hellraiser because it was a little too gruesome for me. I hated where they hook their skin and pull on it.
