How did you get the musical taste you have now?

Already at 12 I was introduced (from an online music site) to hard rock and loved it. However, due to the rather randomness of the site I also found other genres I liked, but none as prolific. Later I realised youtube was the best music site for me, since I don't really do mainstream music that much, and there's lots of metal and interesting things there.

A short timeline:

At 12: introduced to hard rock and took a greater interest in music in general
At 13: into Plain White T's, Basshunter
At 14: Drum and bass, techno
At 15: introduced to Dark Moor, Nightwish, Static X, Summoning, Corvus Corax, Rhapsody
At 16: Sabaton, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Sonata Arctica, Lustre
At 17: Embellished my black metal catalogue, Manowar
At 20: Power metal expansion, Epsilon, Caladan Brood, dungeon synth
After 20: Amon Amarth, viking music, "viking metal", historical music

From my parents, or my environment, I think. It just changed all around based on my age and what I was doing.


Age 5-8: Jazz or blues music because my mom and dad.
Age 8-12: Listened to 2010’s pop/hip hop music because everyone in school or my age was into it.
Age 12-14: A mix of 2000-2010’s emo punk rock music and metal because I was going through my trauma and middle school lol.
Age 14-16: I think a mix of hip hop and rap because of my first high school.
Age 16-18: Definitely 1960s-1980s classic rock, psychedelic rock, modern indie music, Big stoner phase from my late high school years.
Age 18-19: Hm, like classic country music/classic rock. All the classic country/rock subgenres because my dad and ex.
Age 19/now: Lol back to my old emo punk rock music or metal. I just started listening to it because I went through an abusive relationship and needed a ‘healthy’ way to express anger and hurt. Metal was definitely a good way to express it. Even in a healthy relationship now, I still love the hardcore stuff or the emo punk rock music lol.


Overall, my “old” music, like the classic rock or classic country, (or the subgenres in those genres) came from my parents, mostly my dad. The newer stuff or the more angsty/hardcore stuff came from my environment such as school, friends, or lifestyles.

I was a pissed off angsty kid, raised mostly on country and gospel "music" cause my mom is super religious. so thats what I listened to cause that was all I knew. I dabbled in classic rock from my dad till I was about 11. I got to middle school and heard all to crap they called "music" that the other kids listened to. So I went back to Rock again but with a different perspective. Now I understood what I was hearimg. At 13 I got my first Metal album. Dragonforce: Inhuman Rampage and from then on it was down the rabbit hole and I never turned back. Now its Heavy Metal all the way. Its the only thing in existence with enough passion, emotion, intensity, and power to keep my crippling anxiety in check.

I listened to a DJ when I was a kid. He had the overnight shift and played a lot of stuff you could not hear anyplace else. He played comedy albums like Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby. He also played stuff from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. He played Leonard Cohen and Mickey Newberry. He also played a lot from this guy. He was a local guy and frequented some of the local clubs. When the other kids were listening to Bon Jovi or the Stones I listened to this.
