What developed your music tastes, to what you listen to now?

So pretty much everything I listen to is due to my friends/family. There's only a few times I've listened to things that no one in my family likes. I also like pretty much every genre of music you could listen to, the only things I don't like is what I dub 'hard rap' which is full of slang and slurs and most of them sound the same and raps super fast, I've only really liked akon and Eminem.

The only things I've listened to that wasn't initially introduced to me by family or friends is ACDC, Celtic women, a few country artists like Josh turner and Carrie Underwood, Cher, Dropkick Murphy's and most recently is walk off the earth and Jonathan young (who's awesome at turning songs into metal).

There may be a couple more, but every major band/artist, I've ever listened to is because of what my parents played or my friends were introduced to.

When I was little, I had Disney album that had selections of classical music like The Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Hall of the Mountain King, The William Tell Overture, The Grand Canyon Suite, The 1812 Overture, and stuff like that.

I also heard a lot of music on TV. Cartoons, TV series themes, Lawrence Welk, musical variety shows hosted by famous celebrities with guests. American Bandstand. I fell in love with bluegrass because of the Beverly Hillbillies and the Andy Griffith Show.

My dad liked John Phillip Sousa music.

In the early '60s, when I was maybe 8 years old, one of my uncles gave me a collection of 45rpm records with a lot of different stuff from the late 1950s, including old country western music. A few that I loved were Little Darlin' by The Diamonds, Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now by Skeeter Davis, Sillhouettes by the Rays, Hot Rod Lincoln by Johnny Bond, Mister Sandman by the Chordettes, some Buddy Holly, ...

My maternal grandfather loved music and had a very eclectic collection of LPs. He even introduced me to things by the Cascades (Rhythm of the Rain), The Four Seasons, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Irish Rovers, Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, and other new pop bands, as well as big band and country western.

in the early 60s' kids started getting transistor radios and I heard lots of top hits there. We took those radios everywhere, all through the '60s.

I heard black artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown, The Temptations, The Supremes.

Early British invasion bands like The Dave Clark 5 and the Rolling Stones.

I became a Beatles fan in 1964.

By 9th grade, friends were introducing me to cutting edge music by people like Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Carole King, Simon and Garfunkel, and bands like Jimi Hendrix, The Moody Blues, The Doors, Steppenwolf, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd. I started listening to psychedelic, progressive, and hard rock.

Beginning in 1970, when I was 16, I started going to rock concerts and probably saw almost one a week (usually two or three great bands per concert) throughout the entire decade. A few favorites that I haven't mentioned were The Who, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Yes.

The first concert I went to was Stevie Wonder opening for Sly and the Family Stone.
The second concert was Black Sabbath opening for Grand Funk Railroad.

So, throughout my life I developed a love for a wide variety of music.

I’ve recently started getting into psychedelic rock/funk kinda vibes. And honestly I got into it because of drugs 💀

That music was made to be listened to while on acid/shrooms. So when I first started using those drugs, I made a playlist of music that people recommended listening to while tripping.
That music was a spiritual experience while high and I eventually started listening to it sober as well lol.
My older brothers also used to listen to that kind of music growing up so there’s also a feeling of nostalgia with some of it.

I also enjoy a lot of emo/pop punk music. I had an emo phase when I was a teenager and got into bands like My Chemical Romance, Falling in Reverse, Paramore, and I listened to all the classic emo songs.
Im not emo anymore of course but I still listen to all the music.

I listen to a lot of other kinds of music but those are really the only two genres that I can give a story for lol

When I joined this new school, the kids here had a variety of music tastes, some I even never knew before. My dad introduced me to Hollywood culture with historical movies like Titanic and important songs like Waka Waka from Shakira (because it was performed in the fifa) but there were genres which I discovered after joining this new school. Like rap, k-pop, instrumentals, metal, etc. I guess it's because music education is an option in this school, there were no music classes in my previous school, only vocals. I chose keyboard and piano option during admission. I heard whatever my mom heard before, the classic 80's - 90's songs or modern Bollywood.

I grew up listening to the Carpenters, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and the Bee Gees in our house in the Philippines. Thanks to my music loving parents who always fill the house with beautiful music. They also don’t care what music I play whenever I used to come home from college. I listened to Eminem, Ja Rule, Amerie and Limp Bizkit in the early 2000s. I also like the new music of today. My playlist is a mix of oldies and new tunes. I don’t pick genres. I’m all for it

Grew up listening to classic rock due to my father, although due to the internet, I started getting into modern rock, metal, and rap from the 90's/2000's in elementary school. So over the years my knowledge of music for these genres just gradually grew and made my music taste pretty broad.

One second I am listening to the Cranberries, Roy Orbinson, or Jackson Browne, then the other I am listening to the exact opposite like Nas, Motley Crue, or Cannibal Corpse.

For the most part it’s whatever’s tied to my special interests. I was listening to nothing but 8-bit music for a while after I found a website to play the gen 1 and 2 pokemon games as well as other games and fell in love with the 8-bit soundtracks and then wanted to find 8-big covers of pretty much any song.

Then I was later into WWII, so I reaaally got into Big Band/Swing music, then Electro-Swing, then progressed into Rockabilly, Doo-Wop, Motown, and then Early Country, so I was very into the Pre-war, Wartime, Post-war stuff

I always liked metal even before I heard any. I liked the sound an electric guitar makes and I wanted to hear more power chords. I liked punk rock when it started back in the late 1970s but something was missing. Then I heard some album tracks from Motorhead and Judas Priest and the rest is history.

I pretty much lost interest in metal after thrash happened in the late 1980s and I ended up listening to crap like Ash and Radiohead, and eventually Muse who were awesome to be fair. Then someone on social media recommended Last. fm and through that medium I discovered Death Metal and Black Metal and the rest, as they say, is history.

Growing up in 1984 I liked La Bamba by Richie Valens at 3 years old when my parents bought Vinyl and would always play it. My parents listened to Tejano music so throughout the 90's, I would always hear artist like Selena, Emilio Navarro, La Mafia, etc. I was never a fan since I don't speak Spanish but do understand a few words. It wasn't until 1999 that I started getting into rock music. It was the Nu Metal scene and my brother was into bands like Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Korn, Linkin Park, etc. Around 2005 I got into Heavy Metal music like Norma Jean, August Burns Red, Demon Hunter, POD, Red, and these were Christian bands on YouTube I do like oldies music more like Beatles, Beach Boys, Temptations, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Chicago, from the 60's and through the 80"s.

I grew up on rap music and the soft rock/pop rock they play over the radio. Decided I wasn't going to put that kinda stuff in my head anymore. So I started to hate it.

Now I listen to folk, a bit of country and opera music. Maybe a little bit of instrumental and songs from TV shows that I thought were good.

Kind of old school, most of my stuff I listen to is on vinyl. I have a truckload that I have obtained over the years, whether it be from the record store, yard sales, etc.

I love going to the used store and pick things up to round out my collection.

When i used to listen to music like in hi school and even as an adult to a certain time in my life I really only focused on the beat (unknowingly) up until my life took a sick twist and I became really depressed but it was at this time music really started to mean something to me not only did I listen to the actual lyrics the artists that are now my fav seemed to sing about exactly what I was going through and still my new fav songs are the ones that I can relate to. So in a nut shell listening to the lyrics apposed to just the beat is what did it for me

There was a DJ that worked the overnight shift at a local radio station when I was a kid. He played music that you could not hear any place else. Mickey Newberry, Leonard Cohen, Jose Feliciano, Orpheus and many others. including this gentleman who has been my fave for my whole life.

I born in 1967 and i left Peru in 1991 so Most of the genres that I know now I heard it first in my country.
The first musicaĺ influence was my grandpa playiing old popular peruvian music with his guitar. then i ztart listening ballads from the records of my uncle. At 11y i started listening mùsic from the radio, different types of music. I can't forget to mention disco club, a tv video show that influenced me a lót in my tastes in pop and rock music

Upgrading my audio eqquipment. Once I started getting into hifi music, it really helped me to expand my taste. Also learning how to eq to my preference helped a lot. I legit wouldn't listen to certain genre's if I can't eq my music.
