I’d say hip hop is my base, but good tunes are tunes, so I can like anything from just about any genre.

Starting with hip hop…I’m also pretty broad in my tastes within the genre. I grew up alongside it, so I can appreciate all eras. I can still get down with some of the old school classics like Run DMC, although it can seem a little primitive compared to later rap. Definitely have a lot of respect for what I’d call “transitional old school”, like Rakim, who started introducing flow as opposed to the previous choppy cadence usually heard, and complex and thoughtful lyricism.

The 90s rolled around and we started getting divergences of pop rap (a million one-hit wonders, stuff like Vanilla Ice), conscious rap (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul), and gangsta rap (NWA and it’s resulting solo acts of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Eazy E), and as we got into the mid-90s, the gangsta scene really took off, with west coast and east coast styles of it. I was always personally drawn to gangsta rap. Coin flip for if I preferred east or west coast, there was just so much good stuff out there in the mid-90s, and I was in high school, so I had so much time to consume music. Mobb Deep, Notorious B. I. G., all the Death Row records guys, Big L, etc, etc. I think I ultimately like my rap music to sound as menacing as possible😂

2000s rap was hit or miss, but we got some good stuff out of the Dirty South from little Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, etc. A lot of people my age got turned off with new rap at this point in time and pined for the 90s, which I get, but you have to keep evolving or you’ll just be that old guy shaking your fist at young whippersnappers, lmao. Dipset was definitely my favorite of this era. Cam’ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, Hell Rell…they all gave me that menacing vibe I was looking for.

2010s brought “mumble rap”, and guys my age REEEAAALLLLLYYYYY hate it😂 But I find the winners where I can. I’m having trouble getting the appeal of little Uzi Vert. Migos has some decent stuff. Drake is a goddamn hit machine, but I’ve known him since DeGrassi, so he’ll always be Jimmy Brooks to me, haha. Meek Mill is very good. My favorites are the guys of Griselda Records, they’re throwbacks to my era. And if you want menacing…. they’re menacing. “Daringer compared to RZA, I’m compared to n——as that’ll stab you in your face with a pair of scissors”🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

For other genres…. I’d probably say 2000s pop punk/mall emo type stuff is my second favorite. I used to work at Hollister and it built on my outlier love of Blink-182 and first-album Green Day. I am a sucker for a big hook, so something like “Sugar, We’re Going Down” by Fallout Boy (who I don’t really like that much otherwise) hits the bullseye for me…

Any of those anthemic “feels like I’m 17 and mad at my parents and just want to run away with my girlfriend” songs will get me. “Great Escape” by Boys Like Girls, “Check Yes, Juliet” by We The Kings, “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard, etc, etc. Also shout out to old school Paramore, let’s say the first three albums.

I also like a lot of rock music from the 90s. Grunge, alternative, metal…it’s all good if it’s good stuff. I think I just feel nostalgic for my teen years, so I love the feel I get from it and it transports me back to a place in time. Young man, you have no idea about trying to get to third base with that cute chick with the flannel shirt and Doc Martins with Pearl Jam’s “Black” or Bush’s “Glycerine” playing in the background, haha

Smashing Pumpkins were probably my favorite. This one always makes me feel like I’m hanging out in ‘94, summer vacation between 9th and 10th grade, especially the soft parts at the beginning and end. Just the sound of aimless, meandering youth…

Probably running long as hell here, so I’ll give brief but VERY honorable mentions to 70s classic rock and 80s pop music, and my internal raver who just never got into going to ravens likes 90s dance music through the later EDM/dubstep movement (dubstep more up my alley for the modern stuff…not that modern anymore, but you know what I mean, haha.

Anyway, anything else I didn’t mention, there’s probably something I can still like from it. Give me a great hook and/or a classic melody, and I’m in👍
