It's equality in action, plain and simple. Read through Cyrano's "History of the empires of the sun and moon" (you may have to search by author, as the title gets translated in a STUPID number of ways), and you'll see. And as that was the book that pretty much *invented* science fiction as we know it, it's pretty much just keeping up the tradition. Someone figured "Hey, why should it only be alien DUDES that interplanetary explorers want to bang?", and added the ladies and lady-equivalents in.
