Do representation actually matter?

I am brown girl. Most shows I watch are anime and k drama. Sometimes Turkish or European/American/western shows. Most people there don't look like me but i seriously don't care. Most of the show I watch have predominantly male cast I still love them. i don't understand how representation matter.

The vast, overwhelming number of fictional characters that I've come across over the years have been nothing like the person I am, but I would never be bothered by that fact. Do you know what really matters in, for example, a movie? A decent story with believable, well-developed and thought-out characters. A movie that doesn't try to push a "message", a film where I'm not made to feel like I'm a bad person for simply existing, a film that doesn't try to preach to me like I'm some kind of idiot.
Unfortunately, Hollywood in particular seems to be churning out such drek at an ever-accelerating pace, while those involved in the production of these abysmal movies congratulate each other on how "enlightened" they think they are every time the Oscars are announced.
Who needs to be subjected to rubbish like that? Not me, that's for sure. Maybe they should use their cinematic duds to torture Guantanamo Bay prisoners, instead of employing less nasty methods like water-boarding and electrocution. I'm sure it would be more effective.

I really don’t either.. I think representation is just a plot to make people feel insecure about they’re skin and notice people are different. Personally I think movies should just film whatever actors are available and fit the part.. because we’re trying to concentrate on the story of the film.. not the people playing the part?

Representation doesn't matter to people with empathy. With the rise of narcissism you get people thinking its important. Yes im a white male but i can feel for the character even if he's black or its a woman. What would it matter? Only someone with no empathy would find themselves unable to connect with people they can't imagine that they themselves are the character so they MUST have characters representing themselves to identify at all with the material. Very sick in my opinion.

I am a white man but I am not a wizard, space cowboy, super hero or even animated so?

I tell you what does bother me though is all the characters who are desperately trying to represent minorities in order to be politically correct.

I tell you what you could watch though; Firefly, that has a geniune strong black lady character. At least I always felt she was a geniune character, I love Firefly its really good (it also has space cowboys).

SAME. i get so engrossed in the plot that i dont even give second thoughts about the show's "diversity".

like when i see people complaining about an east Asian movie having no black people--- well firstly, adding a black person in a film which takes place in a country where predominantly Asians live would be tokenism.

No but Ik in modern culture they r adding characters of diversity which doesn’t really need to be there…. It just highlights that it was “needed” and the new characters don’t blend in well since they were just added after-the-fact, so their lines etc end up being corny and not matching the movie or show they are in

It really doesn't, shows are for drawing the crowds and there is no rule that forces representation on creators
