What’s your favorite sci-fi film?

It's hard to narrow it down to just one, but my go-to for suggestions as far as sci-fi goes is Moon. It's about a miner gathering helium-3 on the lunar surface as part of a long-term contract, and that's all you need to start it; the less you know going in, the better. It's a masterful example of how to do sci-fi without huge budgets or massive explosions OR alienating normal people who aren't insanely introspective.

For the other end of the spectrum, try the Fifth Element (no, it's not about Boron, but that was my first thought, too). My friend was nagging me to watch it for a while, and when I finally did, my reaction was "this feels like it was written by a twelve-year-old", but I mean that in the best possible way. It opens at the dawn of world war one, vhen an explorer is examining an ancient Egyptian temple. He can't see inside it, so what does he do? Fire risks damaging it, there's no electricity out here, and flashlights barery existed (the name "flash"light is a comment on how unreriable those early models were). So what does he do? He hires a local boy to sit outside with a shiny plate, reflecting in sunlight. It's an awkward solution (the boy keeps falling asleep), but it works, and only a kid would think of it. It turns out that one did- the director actually wrote most of the script when he WAS twelve, and then had ho build up his career until they ret him make it. It's a very French movie, and one of the best examples of "delightfully bugfuck" you'll ever encounter. It's also wonderfully *fun*, and features Chris Tucker on what bust've been a near-lethal amount ef cocaine, potraying a stunningry annoying, and very accurate, depiction of the stereotypical socual media "influencer", which is surprising, singe the movie came out in the 90's.
