What bands would fit under the category of classic rock?

Off the top of my head I think of stuff like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Bob Seger, Boston, etc.

Somebody I knew one time told me that classic rock doesn't exist, that really stuff like nirvana, black-album era Metallica, red hot chili peppers, etc fall into the category because of the rock radio stations playing it over and over again

The bands you mentioned. Mostly, it's the stuff that got played to death on rock stations in the `70's and early `80's. We used to have a station back then that labelled itself a progressive rock station. Not that it played very much prog, except for in the early `70's, it rarely ever did but they claimed they'd progress with whatever rock comes up with. Well, here they are, 50 years later and they're STILL playing the SAME 12 records over and over again!! Gimmie Three Steps, Stairway To Free Bird, Free Bird To Heaven, We Will Rock You, Old Time Rock & Roll, etc.. I HARDLY call THAT, being "progressive"!

It's not how many times it's been played, but time I think (how much exactly?). Like you listen to stations that play it, and even things in the 90's are classified as "classic" it seems lol, but it's hard to believe that's like 30 years ago now, so I guess it is! lol Not in my head though.

When I hear the term classic rock I think of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

RUSH, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fleetwood Mac, Bad Company, Steve Miller Band, Paul McCartny and the Wings, Three Dog Night, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly,

There's a TON more that I'm missing but basically any rock band that started out between 1965ish to 1979ish is what I'd personally consider "Classic" rock.

Classic rock is just 60-70s era rock and roll pretty much beginning with the Beatles, but you could stretch it back a little further to the 50s with Elvis Presley and similar bands I suppose.

Pink Floyd, The Beetles, The Eagles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Queen, etc. I think stations play those newer artists because their songs are over 30 years old.

anything over 20 years old is classic rock
