This question was inspired by @sage2021 who reminded me of this gem from the archives.
It is sort of creepy to think how this 60 year old song can apply to what is happening in the world today.
P. F. Sloane wrote this but Barry McGuire made it a hit.

I totally remember that great song, although I probably never heard it until several years later, maybe 1968 or 9 when it became popular on independent FM radio stations.

it was released in 1965.

I know. But I was 11 that year. Kids had transistor radios, but I don't think it was getting much airplay on commercial radio stations. It wasn't until 1968 or 69 that I started hearing more diverse kinds of music.
I can't remember when I first heard it, though. It might have been earlier because I really liked the folk music of that era (and still do), because the lyrics were meaningful.

The lyrics to the song are sad but poignant, and McGuire's gravely vocals add to the feelings of pain and despair. By the time I entered high school in 1969, the song was kind of an anthem for those of us who supported the civil rights movement and opposed the war.

I imagine that once the anti-war movement started getting some traction it got more airplay.

I heard that Eric clapton was supposed to sing it but he did not want to. They got McGuire to do it.

He also wrote the iconic song "Secret Agent Man" for Johnny Rivers. He has an amazing career.
