I generally like the concept of 'fantasy' - however, the movies that are made are all the same cheap shit:

Hero with a sword and big muscles meets a girl who's also a hero - with a small amount of clothing. They travel somewhere, add some friends, and while doing so cut people to death (bad people of course); in the end they ''succeed''... in nothing particular.

(if you know of any that's different: relieve my frustration and let us know here)

I'd love to see a movie that follows a novel of Ursula le Guin, or Marion Zimmer Bradley.

But the average consumerist won't be interested; so the money bags of movie making won't produce it.

I was tempted to name ''Dark City'' - but I think that this is S/F, rather.

Lord of the Rings. Hands down. The cinematography and special effects still outclass 90% of hollywood's stuff today. Even 20 years later.

And no final battle scene will ever compete with King Thèoden shouting "DEATH" before leading the epic charge.

And the original score is still the best and most iconic movie soundtrack of all time. Rivaled only by Starwars.

the mummy (a bit cheesy but pretty good) and the corpse bride (tim burton animated thing. really really good but super sad)

The '80s classics were the best - Labyrinth, Neverending Story, Dark Crystal, Momo, etc. Also, the old Harryhausen movies, like "Clash of the Titans" and "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad". "The Thirteenth Warrior" was good too, although it's technically historical fiction rather than fantasy. I guess "Pan's Labyrinth" is the best vaguely modern one. All those LoTR/Hobbit movies are too long, have too much CGI, and are waaaay too cheesy.

Yepp: Tolkien would be very disappointed to see what they made from 'the Hobbit''. Fuck the money-bags who pervert good fiction novels.
