House of the Dragon? Yay or Nay?

I think I'll pass. It's become pretty apparent that Martin has no intention of actually finishing the series, and that willingness to just cast it all aside, and specifically say "I don't want anyone else to finish this if I die", rather than just admit he's lost his passion and hand it off to someone else (Brandon Sanderson springs to mind- I've never read the Wheel of Time series, but I'm very much enjoying the Stormlight archive), leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth, especially about starting anything new of his.
I might go back and watch it if it ends well and I hear it's pretty good, though.
Did you watch or read Game of Thrones?
Yes, both.
What did you think about GoT?
It was a pretty solid adaptation, at first. There were some questionable parts, but I'd call the first two and a half seasons fantastic, with some small problems poking up in the second half of season three and season four. In season five, as various plots began to pass their counterparts in the books, quality fell, and sharply- much like Tolkien, it's the dialogue that's the soul of the series, and without that, the writers weren't nearly as good. The oversimplification of the Dornish plots- turning EVERYONE involved into someone who shares Oberyn's short-sighted focus on revenge, and replacing Ellaria's elaborate schemes to put Aegon on the throne with ::shudder:: "bad pussy".
That's actually another point- I, and many others, found it surprisingly refreshing that the series didn't bother with Hollywood's popular L-shaped bedsheets, that come up to a woman's chest but only a man's waist. When characters would logically be naked, they WERE naked. It wasn't just about boobs, it was about IMMERSION (and boobs, to be fair). But after a certain point, they began to forget that you need PLOT, as well as tits, or it's not going to work.
By the final two seasons, you had characters making absolutely nonsensical decisions to rush toward the designated ending. Supposedly, the ending we got WAS more or less what Martin planned, and I can actually see it working- *with* proper buildup, which we absolutely did NOT get. Littlefinger and Varys, two of the show's best characters, suddenly lose ALL their intelligence; not just as schemers, but as HUMANS, and continue operating insanely dangerous games in more-or-less plain sight, not because of what they stand to gain, but because the show needs to kill them off: the latter becomes a bold hero for no damn reason (let's kill Danerys while Circe is still alive, meaning she wins, and the realm bleeds, and the whole scheme to keep a Targaryen alive was for absolutely NOTHING! Brilliant!), while the former just becomes an idiot (sure, I'll submit to the authority of people who have absolutely NO legal right to judge my actions, and not offer a single defense for what I did!). Jon Snow goes from being a dedicated brave and just leader to a mindless puppet.
And the ending of the White Walker business was just atrocious. That I CAN'T see working- not only did it make no sense from a plot perspective, it changed the entire focal point of the series, from "the titular 'game' DOESN'T MATTER; in the face of death, we unite or we all die" to "the most important thing is who winds up with a chair".
Neither this nor the lord of the rings series.
no interest
Aww. Why not?
Did you watch Game of Thrones?
What did you think of GoT?
Ya. That last season, looks like they realized they were running out of money and just decided to have one big fight and kill everyone.

I don't think it's on any of the channels I get.
You can't get HBO?
nope
I watched it but was so disappointed by the end of got I don't know why I did.
Agreed. I was extremely disappointed by the ending of GoT. Of what I have read, heard and seen, HotD is GREAT so far.
Got to watch it, thanks for the reminder.
Ok I watched it, but it doesn't have Peter dinkelage. It's not going to be as good.
True, but it does have Matt Smith (Dr Who) and Rhys Ifans (Harry Potter, Spiderman)
Yeah, I personally don't think it's going to be a smash hit, they probably won't be making any more tv adaptations of his books after this.
It looks promising.
I thought so too. It set up the schism nicely.
I will watch a few then decide
I thought the first episode was GREAT!
