I think it was a great start, there’s definitely some room for improvement and I think the show should’ve been given more episodes in season one since certain scenes were cutout due to how short the run time was that would’ve been integral to the plot but I’m excited to see what season two will bring.
I love the change of making alicent and rhaenyra closer in age and ex best friends cause it makes their relationship way more complex than it was in the books and gives alicent way more depth rather than her just being an evil stepmom archetype.
One thing I hate about it though is how heavily biased the show is towards the blacks. Game of thrones in general is very grey and I believe it’s a misstep to try and favor one side over the other when the entire system Westeros is built on is just fucked up.
I definitely am excited for the second season though ! I’ll be sat when it airs

Initially I thought the show started off slow but around episode 6 or 7, it really picked up! The stakes suddenly went through the roof.
Don't care much for Varys Strong. That scene where he jerked off to Alicent made him go from a potential mastermind worthy of being on par with Littlefinger or Varys (GoT) to slimy perv really quickly in my eyes.
I also get the impression that the show is a lot more black and white as well. Like Ser Criston Cole: boring transformation. Daemon Targaryen is the most interesting grey character to me.
Something I miss from GoT is very striking character introductions. It's something I noticed relatively absent in HotD.
Take the introduction of Ned Stark in GoT. We meet him about to execute a deserter of the Night Watch, even though we can clearly see why he deserted. Ned is bound entirely by rules and honor. That is his strength and his ultimate fault.
Or Tywin's introduction when he's slaughtering a stag, foreshadowing the fall of Robert Baratheon while lecturing Jaime on the importance of family.
Or Arya as she mischievously fires an arrow and hits bulls eye after Bran misses as the rebellious warrior.
Or Robert Baratheon who rides gloriously into Winterfell only to make a fat joke and laugh, soon to reminisce over his love of Lyanna Stark with Ned.
I can keep going but almost every main character in GoT had such an unforgettable introduction which often told us so much about who they were right from the start. With HotD, I can barely remember the way the characters were introduced even though I watched the show less than a year ago.
I agree with this, I also wish the time skip was maybe done differently cause I enjoyed the younger cast and the time skip was a big one so a lot of the ways the characters changed and developed is just lost because of how abruptly it was executed.
I also hate how biased the show is towards the blacks, I like that both alicent and rhaenyra have more depth as character but they should have not taken away how cunning they were in the books. I wish there was no random will they won’t they at the end of season one when rhaenyra didn’t want to start a war or alicent trying to make amends. After lucerys took aemonds eye they both should’ve been firmly in their respective camps.
I've not read the books so I might be unaware of the bias the show has towards the Blacks as opposed to the Greens. I currently want to side with Rhaenyra much more than Alicent but I heard both characters can be quite cunning and ruthless in the books. Aemond is starting to become a favorite character for me though on the Greens side.
The time skip was definitely so jarring for me. I got the impression like they were trying to rush through a whole lot of exposition for the first half of the season or so, then when the show really started to pick up and I really started getting used to the changes in cast, the season ended.
As a huge GoT fan back in the day I'm ashamed to admit I haven't seen House of the Dragon and I don't know anyone who has.
That’s a shame. I think house of the dragon was a great improvement, they definitely quit doing a lot of the things that costed got long term success. It’s not perfect but definitely a massive step in the right direction and I’m excited for the second season coming out this June !
They need to put it on Freeview.
not really
How come?
