Were people as mad when Ariel was played by Hawaiian Auli’i Cravalho?

Yes she had red hair. No she is not white. No she could not hit most of the notes when she sang, but she tried right. She comes from an island and thats close enough to make her more of an Ariel than Halle Bailey right? Does anyone else recall this much of an uproar when “Moana” played Ariel?

This was the Disney/ABC televised adaptation. Not too different from watching on tv or streaming online than being released in theaters since a lot of the watchers would be the same audience. But funny how they don’t get the same negative reaction in regards to race. Some people this year are just making it more than it needs to be

I don't know when in 2019 they cast Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action "The Little Mermaid", but Auli’i Cravalho was cast in November 2019 as a major character, Jos Cleary-Lopez in the Amazon Prime Video TV series "The Power", adapted from the Top Ten List best-seller "The Power" by Naomi Alderman.

Auli’i Cravalho is also in other Disney productions, so it may be that Auli’i Cravalho already had other commitments and could not star in the live-action version of "The Little Mermaid".

While I did not envision Jos as a multiethnic girl (in the book, it is implied that she is a White girl like her parents), but the Jos character in the movie has a White mother (now played by Toni Collette but previously Leslie Mann was cast) who is married to a Latino man (played by John Leguizamo). So, this is a good casting choice.

I actually think Halle Bailey as Ariel is a decent choice; her eyes are far apart... like a fish.

Not sure what you’re referring to but Auli was in the Disney/ABC version not the new Disney standalone version. She was talked negatively about all over social media when it aired for how bad her singing was. It was likely nerves but yes the singing was bad. Still, not many said negative things regarding her race like they are now doing Halle

My point was that they are so upset about Halle being a black Ariel but they were not upset about Auli’i because she passed for a “whiter” Ariel. My thing is, judge the talent (the acting, the singing, etc) not whatever else people are digging low enough to talk about

I was more critical of her singing I was like wait huh... I am a singer and I knew she was not meeting the notes which was disappointing but I was really happy with queen Latifah she was freaking brilliant. Was happy I waited to see her perform. 😍

Yea it was probably her nerves but she messed up the songs badly. I like Shaggy and Jason Stamos but they also gave a bit of a rough performance. Eric was kind of just there in the background. Queen surprised me and did so well

We’ve already seen the Little Mermaid. It was good, now let’s see something new.

it's like the people who are most outraged about for example an Asian character played by a white person are the least offended when a white role is played by a black actor.
