My thoughts are: big deal; oh boo hoo a mermaid isn't "white".
Well the first mermaid wasn't white; she was Middle Eastern. She was the Assyrian moon goddess Atargatis.
From there, mermaid myths spread throughout Asia, Europe and Africa with each basing their own mermaid stories off the original.
Also, everyone is complaining about Ariel's iconic red hair because "only white people have red hair". Well first of all, that's not true because Melanesians have red and blonde hair:
But Ariel's hair isn't red-head red (which is more like orange), it's crimson red (and we know that Disney doesn't just draw red hair as crimson red because characters have orange colored hair). So Arielle's hair isn't a natural human color so complaining about her not being white for that would be like complaining about a non-white mermaid having green hair.
