"Set in a tropical resort, it follows the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of one week."

Some have described it as, "a satire of rich people problems," but I think that's too simplistic a summary. That's certainly part of it, but not all of it. The deeper you go, the more you realize even the initially more innocent and moral characters can have blood on their hands.

It captivated my attention from the very first frame. It's not fantasy, has no special effects, is firmly rooted in reality and culture today (sometimes disturbingly so), but man, it percolates.

Some Word to Describe It?

  • Social commentary
  • Dark satire
  • Tropical anxiety
  • Colonialism
  • Exotic
  • Tribal
  • Invoking a zoo-like quality, where nature attacks back
  • Discordant
  • Arrhythmic
  • Familiar yet oddly disorienting
  • Orgasmic moans, a war-cry of almost-not-human vocalizations, and never any lyrics
  • Music which laughs at the characters
  • An atmosphere which portends a ritualistic sacrifice

The Music is Also Outstanding:

"There's something uncannily off about the arrhythmic way the beat and the instruments sit right outside the pocket. Like at the end, the two woodwinds playing the minor third don't even match on their entrances. That kind of off-beat sensibility has a really subtle but profound subconscious effect that is just... beautifully spooky. I kind of think this theme might be a masterpiece."

Season 2:

It was intended to be a limited series, but was so well-received, they've produced a Season 2, and it is beginning October 30, 2022. It will have an almost entirely new cast, and new location - Sicily, Italy, this time.

Yep, that's the very popular Aubrey Plaza. She's got just the right amount of kink and kook for the series.
