Reading books will improve your vocabulary more. Your retention might also be better.

You can improve your vocabulary by reading.
I think both reading books and watching shows can be helpful, depends what aspect of language skills you want to focus on.

Reading books is better if you want to know how to read and write a language. I studying Korean and I couldn’t speak it for shit because I only read/write it.

Now I’m learning Michif, and hear it has helped me speak it better, but I’m not good at reading/writing it. (Although there is no official standardized orthography for it)
