What do you think of Dr Seuss as a author?

A lot of you that are parents with kids at school know it's Dr Seuss week at most schools.

He's the way I learned to read; I've got to give the guys props for that, if nothing else- but I DO give him props for other things: for turning the word of children's literature into something decent (have you ever READ a Dick and Jane book? It's the kind of thing that'd make you wish for illiteracy), showed us all sorts of weird and colorful illustrations, taught moral lessons in a clear and comprehensible way, and gave us all sorts of new and interesting words, like "nerd".

Pretty much the only thing I can say against him is that he got me in trouble once, when, searching for toilet paper after the downstairs bathroom had run out, I checked the one in my parents' room, and found a copy of The Seven Lady Godivas that my dad had hidden there for some reason. Intrigued by the prospect of a new Dr. Seuss book, I borrowed it; my mom flipped out when she found it. But I don't think you can really blame the doctor for that.

I was never a big fan as a kid. My cousin used to have all the books like Cat in the hat and I couldn't see the point.

Well, I teach kindergarten and we spent the week reading Dr. Seuss books and doing seuss related writing and math. Monday we read cat in the hat and the cat in the hat comes back, Tuesday we read green eggs in ham, Wednesday we read wacky Wednesday and fox in socks, Thursday we read one fish, two fish- and Friday we don't have school. The kids loved it and that made me happy! Green eggs and ham seemed to be their favorite and it was a nice break from our regular prescribed curriculum. A fun work week for me! 🙂
