Freud is for me one of the greatest swindlers in history as far as the psychological and medical field is concerned.

Of course he was great. We’re still talking about him. Even though you claim that he’s worthless, YOU’RE still talking about him. We aren’t talking about nobodies nearly a century after their deaths. Ell oh ell!
I can top your unpopular opinion though. A LOT of the science we relied on 100 years ago, we now know is incorrect to some extent or another. Did you know that medical doctors used to prescribe cigarettes to asthmatics? If it weren’t for Freud’s ventures and, yes, his mistakes, we likely wouldn’t know some of what we think we know now. If that doesn’t crack your egg, imagine what we’ll know another hundred years from now that partially or wholly refutes what we think we know now. That’s the thing about real, responsible science that the talking heads and their apes & parrots just refuse to understand. It’s not fixed. Discovery is a process, not a result. Saying something is “science” doesn’t make it an indisputable fact. Scientific observations and conclusions are constantly disputed. Science is the process of challenging our understanding of ourselves and our environment. I submit that when we stop disputing science, it ceases to be science.
The thing is Psychoanalysis does not end with Freud. There are a LOT of other people that went beyond what he theorised, like Lacan, to give just one example.
The idea that mental problems are not all fixable by drugs (not to mention an icepick through the corner of your eye or etc) and you have to explore the mind to explore a resolution is as valid today as it was then. And we owe part of that to Freud.
Think of how the pharma industry tries to discredit this and you might find he was a good doctor.
Now about a great doctor? Well, he once prescribed an overdose of cocaine to a collaborator so, let's just stick with the fact he was a trailblazing Pioneer in psychotherapy and a decent doctor who made his mistakes like anyone else.
Freud made a laudatory dedication to Mussolini, with Chancellor Dollfuss, he worked with the Göring Institute so that psychoanalysis could exist under the Nazi regime, a cocaine addict, he had a surprising relationship with his sister-in-law.
You know there are sick people who go to Lourdes and come out cured, I don't see why this kind of thing wouldn't exist with psychoanalysis, lol.
Well, there have been several books on this subject, and Freud invented cases where he said that he had succeeded in curing patients when it was not true. Some of the patients he had ended up committing suicide or falling into great depression.
All that I wrote about Freud in my previous comment plus all that, is enough for me to make him a despicable character.
All the more reason not to confuse him with all the men and women that greatly reformulated, advanced and... You know what. Nevermind.
The question was about Freud.
You can see him as however you want. It's up to you.
I know Psychoanalysts who cringe at Freud's mention, and that is revealing in itself.
At the time he was alive…yes. He was a groundbreaking intellect. Must have been all that cocaine.
Currently…if I saw a doctor high on cocaine spewing the ideas he was spewing where those ideas were never heard of before, I would definitely run for the hills! 😆
I don't know anyone who agrees with everything he said, but he was pretty groundbreaking. Just out of curiosity, what do you think of Erikson?

Having read Freud extensively in the original German for school, I know a little bit about his thinking and his concepts. Much of his work is, necessarily, colored by his own personal psychopathology, but his concepts - particularly transference - are well taken and have been validated by a lot of clinical evidence in my own practice. Don't be so quick to dismiss him just because you don't like his views about women.
I think it is very doubtful that unless you have a great deal of education you actually understood what he wrote, and why he wrote it.
Freud made a laudatory dedication to Mussolini, with Chancellor Dollfuss, he worked with the Göring Institute so that psychoanalysis could exist under the Nazi regime, a cocaine addict, he had a surprising relationship with his beautiful sister.
You know there are sick people who go to Lourdes and come out cured, I don't see why this kind of thing wouldn't exist with psychoanalysis, lol.
Absolutely and what is most responsible for is establishing the loss of accountability in man. It is some Unconscious thing that caused one to break the 10 Commandments. And Jung provided dreams as the answer.. And Rogers took the unconscious Self (Freud/Jung) and made it into Self-Concept, Self-Identity, Self0Actualization AND the never ending attempt to heal the unconscious so the "Live the Better Life" will be. Man can't enlighten or fix himself as he is fallen... end of that story !!!
Many of conclusions were wrong, but he was the first to start asking the questions. Many of his female patients reported sexual molestation in their childhood. He was in denial about how common sexual abuse was and thought this was a common delusion.
Keep in mind, people practiced medicine for 5,000 years and In wasn’t until the 1920’s that doctors started doing more good than harm. The science of psychology is only about 159 years old.
i think his general structural model of the human psyche is a great starting point for psychology. you gotta consider that he's bascically the first guy who ever came up with psychoanalysis. you can't expect that he got it all figured out from the get go.
I think Freud had some good ideas for his time and laid foundational psychology for certain current psychology. However, I believe a lot of his concepts were wrong or built in a world of conformation bias.
I don''t know about being a doctor, but he started a great progressive rock band!
Sigmund Freud was the best neurologist who has ever lived and as you may know, the founder of psychoanalysis, and that is why he will always be involved when anything related to phycology is discussed in universities worldwide. He discovered and disclosed in his findings what no other in his field had dared to talk about or disclose. Long discussion.
I think its a pseudo science and he never succesfully helped a patient. also penis envy and castration fear aren't correct. I think he had an obsession to fuck his own mother and kill his father. He tried to convince himself it was normal by creating his theories.
From what little I know, most of his theories have been debunked. He did have a student named Karen Horney though lol.
He left his footprints. And they weren't negative, I think.
I might agree that in large parts he's a bit over-rated.
Freud was outstanding. Not because he was always ethical or correct, but he thought outside the box and made us question more than we had before, while giving us a new lense to look through
I had to study some of his work for my education degree and I think he is just an ignorant pervert.
There’s no clear answer. A great therapist helped me but she wasn’t Freudian.
Freud d II dnt really vonside rd himself a practicing MD. H was ire of a phiosipher/psychilogis.
I entirely agree. Psychoanalysis is a fake discipline.
Very influencial from a historical point of views. But most his views and ideas are completely outdated and absurd by today's standards.
I like him. His theories still hold importance to this day. Also, he was hot not that that matters.
He wasn't very professional. He thought testing the effects of cocaine on himself was a good idea.
He did pioneer the field of psychology but he did have some wrong ideas.
At his in no psycological advice could I Release her.
