What do you think about the Disney live-action remakes?

I've seen three of them so far, which have been Cinderella, Alladin, and The Lion King. Cinderella was actually halfway decent. Alladin and The Lion King though were, to put it nicely, dreadful. Between trying to hit gold twice, the limitations of a live-action version of a cartoon, poor casting, bad acting (or over-acting), a lesser ability to suspend disbelief, and a handful of other issues, I just don't think they're good efforts.

But that's just me. What are your thoughts on them?

I'm pretty open minded about remakes (whether it's live action or remakes of classics). I understand producers and directors wanting to bring something fresh when re-imagining material, so I'm not very harsh about them. Where Aladdin is concerned, the live action was more the Will Smith show (even though the Genie steals the show in the original animated version as well as the Broadway stage version), so the love story gets overshadowed. But it's all entertainment and I haven't yet found any reason to intensely dislike remakes of anything. I liked the 2010 remake of True Grit better than the John Wayne version from the 1960s. I like most of the West Side Story remake as much if not better than the 1961 original, but I'm a musical and musical theater nerd anyway. Interestingly, it's strange how everyone called the live action version of Mulan a remake of the 1998 animated version. The story of Fa Mulan is over 1,000 years old, and has been told on film at least a dozen times (but not in English). The 2020 live action version was pretty spectacular, still the same story, but people seemed to hate it because there wasn't a talking dragon named Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy) in it.

Cinderella lacked music and an appealing prince. I mean that dude is hot af in The Eternals but not in Cinderella. Aladdin was EVERYTHING. Honestly couldve done without Will in blue but man the music and everything was on point. Aladdin was gorgeous. Lion King was very disappointing but both live Jungle Books were better. Cruella and Maleficient 1 were hands down the best live action films aside from Aladdin (which gave us music too). Maleficient 2 was disappointing. I want to see Little Mermaid but aside from the disappointing hairstyle, the guy playing Prince Eric is hideous. I can think of manh more black haired blue eyed guys that couldve played him. Prince Eric is 100% my fave disney prince so yea im disappointed in his casting. Live action Tarzan was booooring. The Cinderella with Brandy/Whitney Houston and the one with Camila Cabello were great. I think the live action you mentioned had the most actual cinderella looking cinderella but yea all 3 cinderella films had hideous Princes. Beauty and the Beast looked a hotass mess and i never finished it. haven't seen Lady & the Tramp yet. The old live action Dalmation film was decent but i prefer the cartoon

Calling The Lion King "live action" is a stretch when it's entirely CGI'd, even though that's their own words. Cinderella was watchable (once). The rest are trash. What they should've done with them is made the live actions closer to their original source material they're based on, rather than ripping themselves off.

They're doing Moana next.

Disney is creatively bankrupt. They don't know how to write or adapt anything that hasn't already been done anymore, and decisions being made between their animation studios, Lucasfilm, and Marvel implies that they're also allergic to making money or listening to the consumer base at all.

They ruined Beauty and the Beast by having a gay Lefou and Belle saying “I Love You” after the last rose petal fell. The remake of Pinocchio was stupid. The Blue Fairy didn’t come and turn him into a real boy. The Lion King was pretty good. But the remake of Aladdin was the best remake yet. I haven’t seen any of the others but I’m looking forward to the remake of The Little Mermaid.

I think you nailed it. The limitations of live vs. animated. I much prefer the animated in every instance. The only live sort of adaptation I've liked so far has been "Once Upon A Time" and most of that was due to Robert Carlyle.

I have not seen any of them. There is no way they could be better than the original. Animation is what Disney did better than anyone else.

I've seen the new Lion King. It was interesting, but also forgettable.

Garbage. Right into the bin. Even if they're halfway decent, they never seem to turn out better than the original.
