Arlo Guthrie had a huge hit with this song. Everyone thinks that he was the one that wrote it. Well it turns out that the late Steve Goodman wrote it.
I love that song. I knew that Arlo didn't write it, but I love his version, which is the only one I had ever heard.
I like this version by Steve Goodman, too.
I started a band that ran from around 2010 to the end of 2019. We played a lot of rock. But I included other songs like Secret Agent Man, Ghost Riders, and City of New Orleans. I actually liked my versions of Ghost Riders and City of New Orleans a lot because they were emotionally touching and dramatic.
City of New Orleans sounds like something my friend Utah Phillips would have written. He spent a lot of time riding the rails and hanging around in hobo camps when he returned from the Korean War. He was a story teller and song writer and was all about nostalgia and telling stories so that bygone days wouldn't be forgotten.
Thanks for sharing this, exitseven. It's another really good choice and a reminder of song writers whose contributions added greatly to the music people still love.
