I didn't follow this case at all, but my understanding is that this was originally thrown out due to a lack of evidence, and then picked up again, apparently with no additional evidence? If that's the case, then it's yet another spectacular failure of the justice system. If not, then good riddance.

I don't have any sympathy for rapists, but I've seen this exact scenario play out in which a court threw out a sexual assault case due to a lack of evidence, only for a military tribunal to push the same charge and produce a guilty verdict in just a couple hours, solely because the people involved wanted to look like they were taking SHARP seriously. For that reason, I'm extremely suspicious of these "... happened 10+ years ago" types of cases.

Not really. Rape case appeals fail more than 90% of the time.
