I never understood why they did that? Why let the competition succeed when they didn't even get along?

It was dumb because surely a professional storm chaser would know that it would take a lot more than just "anchoring" to get the doohickey thing to work. That and a China tea set has better odds against a toddler with a sledgehammer than a pickup truck against an F5 tornado.

Plus, plot hole, wouldn't the sensors in Westley's truck have just released into the tornado anyway?

And while the the rivalry is noted, their intent all along was to save people's lives by improving early warning systems for tornadoes. Sure, Jo (no "e"), Bill, and the gang wouldn't have gotten the recognition, but their consciences would have been clear at least.

Also, if you ask me, the rivalry between Private Hudson and Westley doesn't make much sense anyway. Private Hudson doesn't like Westley because "he's in it for the money, not the science". My thing is though, why should I care? If I get to keep living because the dude who saved my life wants to get rich, who cares? We both get what we want.

Also also, when you think about it, Private Hudson isn't really the hero of the story. Kind of the opposite, in fact. He's petty (as already demonstrated) and while being engaged to another woman is still emotionally hooked on his ex-wife.
