Because they don't truly believe in human goodness, and like to see their suspicions validated. If it's impossible to truly be a good person, you don't have to be bad about not being one, after all. If it IS possible, on the other hand...

It shows that even the strongest, even seemingly impossible to beat hero actually can. It's the way they come back from defeat that emboldens a true hero.
