Why do people say they're aren't heroes when they do heroic things?

Is it because they don't want to be heroes or they know themselves that they aren't heroes?

Because heroic things rarely feel heroic when you're doing them; they just feel desperate. And sometimes, going back and reflecting on dangerous what you did was, and how you close you came to dying- or worse, in some cases- is scarier than the action itself was, especially without adrenaline pushing you forward.

Because it may appear "heroic" to you, but for them it's just a job and they know it's dark secrets.

Take soldiers for example - they are being paid to kill people. But we jokingly call them "veterans" when they can no longer do it.

Because heroes don't exist. Nobody does anything in a vacuum, there is always a personal reason to do something. Always.

I saw a man save a little girl from getting hit by a car in a parking lot. He took a bump from the car and was knocked down. Luckily the car was going slow enough that he only broke his arm. @Agape93 what personal gain did he get?[

You can be a hero and feel good about doing good. Sorry you're so jaded. You can get paid to be a hero and still do heroic acts hence firemen as an example.. Have a good day

That's not how it works. Heroes are heroes for being selfless, self sacrificing and without expectations of anything good. If you do good for a personal reason, you're not a hero. You're certainly not a hero if you're paid to do it. You're just doing a job. You wouldn't do it without compensation, so you don't get even the credit a bystander would get.

Somebody who helps rescue somebody from a car wreck may be called a hero but in their frame of reference they are just doing what anyone else would do and just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
