Why actors get paid so goddamn much?

Margot Robbie was reportedly paid $12.5 million to star in the Barbie movie. According to a report from Variety, Margot Robbie was paid $12.5 million to play the titular character in 2023's Barbie movie. The same report claims that fellow Barbie actor Ryan Gosling received the same compensation for his role as Ken.

i mean they are completely replaceable there r lots of people that would make people flock to movies. im surprised they get paid so much. normally when things are common they are not worthy much

Movies take a couple of years to make, and actors and actresses sometimes work the whole day. So a salary for 4 years with 14-16 hours of work its not sooo much. Still more than the avarage person but less than what some ceos earn for doing nothing but playing golf.

Also some actors and actresses get an additional bonus based on how well the movie does in theatres.

And only the lead actors and actresses earn this much, the rest of the crew gets peanuts.

Because they can. They can because enough people pay to see the movies that the producers will fork out the money for actors they think will bring in the audience. It's simple math, plus some guesswork.

Paying very high prices for actors, athletes, CEOs etc is worth it from a business point of view.

I don't know much about actors, but I know choosing them is a complicated business with lots and lots of discussion. Plus, the person they want isn't always available, or doesn't want the part.

They aren't completely replaceable. Acting is much much harder than it looks. Go to a community theater play and to see the huge difference between the professionals and the amateurs. My wife and I have been to a few semi-professional plays here in Seattle and have concluded that no one here can act or direct.

Acting looks easy because the professionals make it look easy. Same for stand-up comedy or musical performance.
