The origin of this so-called Halloween.

This was a festival for the ancient Celts marking the end of summer/harvest season, and therefore the beginning of winter.. which the Celts associated with death. For this brief moment (sunset from October 31 to November 1), the spirits of the dead could coexist with the living.

I'm well aware of it. As someone of celtic descent I can tell you that Halloween is and has long been a part of gaelic irish/Scottish/Isle of man culture and is part of the 3 days of Allowtide that is the triduum of All Saints' Eve (Halloween), All Saints' Day (All Hallows') and All Souls' Day. A long gaelic cultural tradition on Halloween of dressing up in scary masks, making Jack o Lanterns etc which was carried to the new world by irish catholics the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and so on and like St Patrick's day being inclusive of other non-irish catholics it was widely adopted into the calendar of those countries. Many different cultures have similar days, I know Hispanics have their Day of the dead for instance.

Also jack-o-lanterns were used to scare off the evil spirits. People would put them on front porch.
