Yes i didn't watch any of his films (aside from crystal skull) until like a year or two ago so it was a shock factor for me too

The Last Crusade, with Raiders a VERY close second. It avoids the silliness of Indy clinging to a submarine for 72 straight hours, and has an absolutely perfect ending; literally closing with the main characters riding off into the sunset.
