I'd say the Last Crusade. True, it deviates more than Raiders did from the old adventure serial formula, but 1. it's still not hugely different, and 2. it actually gives the movie more of its own identity. It also doesn't have Indy holding his breath for 48 straight hours atop a submarine.

Plus, it had a deeper lesson about family, obsession, and personal advancement, brought a satisfying ending to the franchise, and gave us Harrison Ford and Sean Connery together (just try and tell me God- or at least Spielberg- doesn't love us).

Yea the raiders sub scene always makes me laugh. They have a deleted scene from it where Indy rode the periscope all the way to the island saying the sub was at periscope depth the whole time which is kinda like “come on now”. But Crusade with Connery and the family subtext, plus young Indy is great. I love Raiders though too
