Gaius was his first given name. Julius was his family name. Caesar was a a cognomen that was a Roman thing that was used to identify certain branches of a prominent Roman family. There are few similar examples in modern culture, it was like a nickname or extra title that became hereditary like Scipio Africanus or Marcus Licinius Crassus or Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus. It makes sense of the Juli clan was large to distinguish individuals, Gaius Julius Caesar was the same name as Caesar's father, so a different branch of the Juli might have different cognomen like Gaius Julius Iullus or Gaius Julius Aquila or no cognomen.
