Is it me or horror movies just aren't that good anymore?

The last good horror movie was jeepers creepers. 1 and 2. The last ones are awful and any scary movie that came out after has been horrible. Horror is my fav genre and I agree.

I haven’t really ever been scared by a horror movie. The only one which came close was when I watched Rosemary’s Baby as a child. At that time, I was still immature enough to think Satan actually existed so I thought it could really happen.(Brilliant classic by Roman Polanski. Do yourself a favour if you haven’t seen it.)

I have noticed this effect with other religiously charged films of violence. For example The Exorcist was reported to have resulted in an actual fatality in a cinema. I’m not sure, but I think the same thing may have happened with another movie which featured Satan but I don’t remember the name. Not the one I’m thinking of but perhaps The Nun or one of the Annabelles also caused similar problems.

So I think horrors need to play on your actual fears to be scary. In other words, you need to really be afraid of something to be affected. People who suffered severe night terrors were reportedly very disturbed by A Nightmare On Elm Street back when it was originally released.

In fact, a few old friends and I went to the original screening of Freddy vs Jason many, many years ago and one friend in particular was genuinely scared out of his wits. We were taunting him afterwards by mocking the sound effect used to indicate Jason being near. And this guy was about 17 or so. That guy was quite a gullible personality though. For example he truly believed in God and even silly things like haunted houses. He was very easy to lie to but not stupid. He went on to be an engineer. Actually, a funny story: another guy from that same circle of friends became one of those ridiculous “paranormal investigators” and this guy who was scared by Freddy vs Jason actually sent me some of that guy’s videos as an “I told you so” response to my incredulity toward stupid crap. I thought it was cute. Didn’t have the heart to tell him that stuff is also all fake.

So essentially if you’re running low on fears, horror films won’t scare you.

The kills in "slasher" movies are not very original any more. Just throat slash, beheading, machete through the torso.
Lots of demonic possession movies too - which are all the same if you ask me.
No real creepy ghost stories like the Japanese are good at.

I was a huge horror fan with the Romero films, The Evil Dead series and other classics. The genre has been reduced to more and more disgusting films for people with torture porn fetish. No, thanks, I'm out.

Because of the money they spend on movies companies are not willing to make original shit most horror movies rely on jump scares these days

Cause everything is a remake. For me it feels like horror movies now either overdo jump scared to the point of predictability, or they’re just boring “psychological” horrors.

It is not you. They rely too much on shock value and generally lack good writing. I am a bit of a movie fanatic and to me a lot of older movies could scare you completely without having to show decapitations, mutilations, and the such.
