Why are movies so gory these days?

Are we really that desensitised as a society these days, that watching people get dismembered, crushed or worse on screen, is perfectly acceptable? It feels like I can’t avoid seeing such disturbing things in movies these days. Whereas 10 years ago, most action, adventure or fantasy movies, had mild-moderate gore levels compared to the severe levels these days.

Is this just something that I’ve noticed, or have you noticed this too? And if you have noticed, why do you think movies are so gore-friendly these days? What has changed?

I agree - it’s because pretty much anything goes now a days. When it comes to movies any sicko can make a movie of anything as long as it doesn’t show the penis in the mouth or vagina - then it’s rated x. Otherwise rated R can be anything. Look at the saw movies (I hate horror but a friend brought this up as a bad joke saying that would ruin your life) the girl takes garden shears and cuts off the guy’s penis and feeds it to a damn dog. I saw that and nearly threw up. I quoted Sheriff Buford T Justice from Smokey and the Bandit “What in the hell is the world coming to?”

Yeah, I agree, it has to get more and more brutal and disgusting. I watched lots of horror movies from the 1970s to the 1990s. Gore was part of the story, not the story itself. Ever since this sick torture porn material like Saw arrived, I stopped watching horror.

because that has always been part of hollyweird's goal. I'm so tired of people "justifying" the violence and gore by saying the movie isn't dirty because there's no boobs in it. 🤣

People need to know that this type of violence/gore is as addicting, maybe more so than outright pornography and it is every bit as hurtful to your soul.

The actual formula hollyweird uses is to create "bad guys" that we hate so much, that do things that are so bad, that people actually cheer and get satisfaction from seeing their gruesome, gory detailed deaths or dismemberments-- or shocking enough that we feel really bad for the innocent who just got killed in the graphic manner. But we don't get those feelings without the excess blood and guts.

For any proof, just look at reviews of movies that DON'T show the gore or do the kills off screen. People literally complain that they got no satisfaction from the deaths. Y'all are some sick fucks--and that's what hollyweird has been conditioning you to be.

I wish I could help you, but I grew up watching horror and usually watch the horror genre before anything else so my opinion becomes pretty useless. Some movies are over the top, like Thanksgiving (2023). Maybe because of Deadpool, where horror isn't the focus, they just put it in there, slowly getting "normalized" or "accepted". "It's definitely fake guys. It's not real so it's fine". I don't mind it if gore isn't the focus. I watch horror movies for the villain design, story and his motivation. Not what he does to his victims.

turn it off, especially netflix, but hollywood in general. that stuff happened back in 70's and 80's and it's worse now. people dont' even flinch when it's so awful... are desensitized.

turn it off, get into real life. that is bad enough, but at least can have compassion and feelings.

only select movies, documentaries.

e. g. we watched "Parasite" recently. horrifically awful movie.

Having worked in a cinema for 3 years we ran weekly polls on type of film tickets we stamped during Halloween half-time If a new horror film was showing it out numbered kiddy films by 40%.

Simply put Gore sells more tickets specially if its long running franchise

What are you on about? Cannibal holocaust came out in 1980s and that had animals killed on screen and is banned. Do the maths that came out 40 years ago way more than 10 years ago lol.
Also you want to go back further in time we used to watch people kill each other for the sport of it.

I wasn’t saying that gory movies didn’t exist before now, I was more-so meaning that say, 10 years ago, maybe the occasional movie was super gory. Whereas now, it feels like every 2nd movie is a gore fest.

Cannibal holocaust is an extreme movie to bring up, it’s banned in many places for a reason, so it’s not even worth mentioning with this topic. It’s more of a snuff film than a movie.

I asked if I was the only one noticing this for a reason. It’s completely possible that I’m just more sensitive to gore than I was in the past, therefore I’m noticing it more, who knows? Don’t know unless I ask.

It's of course worth mentioning you compare that to any film today and they've got nothing on it so when someone say's are movies so gory days these days? It's just ignoring that films have been like this for a while.

Sorry it's just my pet peeve when people say These days because it's always factually wrong as the past always turns out to be much worse. Example like "Why is economy so bad these days" yet it's been much worse in the past.
I just find when people say that they always wrong. Just like this question, there is many array of gore films in the past I mentioned a extreme for sure but there was tons of horror films in the past with gore. Even Jaws has quite a bit of gore from 1975.

I don't know what it is that got you thinking this way but you can look through films from 1980s that aren't much different to what we have today. Hellraiser also quite a gory franchise that started in the late 80s. The new recent remake wasn't that different in gore the only real difference is better special effects so maybe that's what your thinking but I don't know. Seems the same.

Terminator 2 has a really cool gruesome scene in which he takes his hand off with a lot of blood. Alien has the icon chestbuster.
Predator has skinned people.

Because they sell. An acquaintance of mine loves Rob Zombie movies and I find them distasteful. I like I spit on your grave which would be distasteful to me other than the fact that the victim takes revenge out on the antogonists.

Instead of coming up with new plots or story lines, they just make scenes more gruesome. Yes I've noticed. Not just the violence though I would agrue sex scenes as well, used to be a shower scene was conterversial now it's full on sex scenes in every movie.

There are still some good scary, but not gory movies out there. The Asians are good at it.
