LOVE KARAOKE, lmao. A couple adult beverages in me, making a spectacle of myself? That’s all me right there😂
So, you gotta read the crowd, first of all. Sing something that they’ll probably know and not hate. The other big thing is to not choose a song I don’t already know by heart. If you have to read the lyrics as you sing, you’re done, if you care about giving a good performance. The great thing about karaoke though, is that it’s for fun and not a competition, so sing whatever you want, how you want, haha. I just personally like to live my rockstar dreams out, I love having random people come up to me afterwards telling me I was good😝
I’m somewhere in that range between “good bad singer” and “bad good singer”, so I can do a little bit. I have a bit of a deeper voice, so I’m best singing a little lower. I wish I could be a better tenor, it would open up so many more options, but I just don’t have full range. I can pull off some things, but other stuff, my voice will crack or fail😂
One song I do pretty well, due to the deeper voice, is Let Her Cry by Hootie And The Blowfish….
https://www.youtube.com/embed/1aVHLL5egRYI can be a pretty good poor man’s Eddie Vedder and do a solid rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Black” as well.
I do have certain songs I can pull off in tenor though. Depends on what notes I have to hit, haha, or how strongly I have to hit them.
Nice & Slow by Usher is DEFINITELY one of my strongest songs. As an added bonus, I have the same amount of letters so I can spell my full name out instead of his during that quick rap part he has😝 “They call me U-S…H-E-R…/S-T…E-V-E…”
https://www.youtube.com/embed/DIpQ4AZSAf8I can do a good Fill Me In by Craig David too, if anyone remembers that…
https://www.youtube.com/embed/3imO7PFU5cIEven throwback-ier, Poison by Bell Biv Devoe, I MURDER that.
If it’s a poppier crowd, a little cliché, but you can’t go wrong with I Want It That Way, plus I can kind of alter my voice to imitate each guy’s part…
https://www.youtube.com/embed/4fndeDfaWCgBackstreet is always a crowd-pleaser, lmao.
BUT…. my favorite, if the crowd is right, and I’m feeling it…. I will RIP some falsetto.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/0Qz_b1di3i8Last time I did that one, the crowd WASN’T really right…. but the DJ stopped and played the real song for a second and said “I just want you all to realize what he was doing there”, and I really appreciated that😂
Some other honorable mentions: Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger is great for a crowd of middle aged “hard-H” hhhhhhWhites😂 ; Regulator by Nate Dogg & Warren G; Twisted by Keith Sweat; another falsetto song Hey There Lonely Girl by Eddie Holman; I do a TREMENDOUS “Margaritaville”; Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love” if I’m in a crooning mood; Alone by Staind if I’m feeling emo lmao; and Bust A Move or Gin N Juice are both party classics that can get the crowd going.
My lady is my main audience support, and she’s been sick a long time so I haven’t been out for karaoke in over ten years, but I can rap/sing in a reasonable facsimile of Drake, so imagine how much uncharted material is still out there, lmao. You can have some fun with that too, because I don’t think anyone takes Drake all that seriously😂
Oh, and my dream, if I could ever get a woman to adequately play the female part (my girlfriend doesn’t karaoke🤦♂️🙄), I would love to do I Got A Man by Positive K. Haven’t done that since a junior high field trip with one of my 8th grade girlfriends. I had the cassette single and this kid Craig brought a boom box😂

"Karaoke" is Japanese for "empty orchestra" (or so I'm told), and such is the level of my musical proficiency that, were I to attempt it, it would be less "empty orchestra" and more "empty karaoke bar" (which I don't know how to say in Japanese).
That said, I DO make plans for what I'd do if I found myself in that situation. To that end, the Champs' Tequila.
Maybe Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. I've got that one down. It's easy.

My wife and I had some friends who had a karaoke machine and LOTS of karaoke CDs. They had about four karaoke parties a year up until covid freaked them out in 2020.
I was lead guitar and vocals in rock bands from age 17 to my early 30s. I started playing again and formed a band in about 2010.
But that couple had karaoke songs that I had never thought about singing before. I discovered that I could sing all kinds of stuff really well, and some of that stuff was from way before my time.
For instance, I discovered that I could sing Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Elvis, Bobby Darin, Ben E. King, and 60s pop songs. Go figure.
One time I tried Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin and killed it. I can sing it just like him. So that's another song I might surprise people with at karaoke. LMAO.

I prefer 60s/70s/80s rock. So I could choose lots of songs. My voice is baritone these days, so I gravitate toward singers like Jim Morrison, Tom Petty, etc.
I don't have to be drunk, but singing karaoke it lots more fun when I am. It gives me an "I don't give a fuck" attitude and I can ham it up. Like when singing something like When a Man Love a Woman by Percy Sledge with James Brown theatrics.Oh I love singing and can sing just like Elvis. Literally. I can nail Elvis. The King, baby! My go to starters are Hound Dog and Suspicious Minds. And I'm not like others, I don't need to drink to sing. I like singing. I like people hearing my singing. I am skilled at singing. I like the compliments. Singing has even gotten me laid quite a few times, in several different countries. LOL.
My personal favorite:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/SvpWRlJY6YQI love going, "Mmmmhhhhrrrmm! Yeaaah--hyarrghhh! Holy Divaaaa!"
I used to always be at least slightly drunk but I just recently tried it completely sober over Christmas. Felt a bit nerve-wracking at first but I got settled in pretty quickly.
I have to be drunk completely to do karaoke. Even then I'm not sure I would do it. But I do enjoy singing Red Solo cup holding a red solo cup when drunk
@elena_stewart I Can Do Many Female Singers Having Done Manyyyy Karaokes Throughout My Years. My Favorite was Any Karen Carpenter. Song God Rest Her Soul. xxoo
well as long as i know the song i don't care but i tend to avoid rap songs if possible, i prefer rock or pop but like i said as long as i know the song i am good at everything.
This is it.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ha3SSgWK-oEI do not sing karaoke probably because i do not drink.
Well I have never done karaoke but last night I was singing tears for fears songs taking a shower. The steam actually helped my voice hold the correct sounding notes instead of cracking them. 👍🙂
Mariachi music or Banda, I know a decent amount of songs just get me drunk before taking me.
I once got a standing ovation for Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N Rose's. Usually to test the waters I do Basket Case by Green Day. One day I would like to try a Robert Plant song.
- Sang at a restaurant/bar one time with a guitarist... not Karaoke though
my voice is not good, so I choose songs that everyone sings along with like Sweet Caroline or Don't Stop Believing
Anaconda, man down, part of your world, Stan
Drunk for sure but Drake - Jungle lmaoo
