Why did this song just vanish into oblivion?

I remember a song from about 20 or so years ago called, "Let's Get Retarded", by the Black Eyed Peas. For reasons unknown it was displaced by "Let's Get It Started", which doesn't make as much sense, because what is it that they want to get started? If I'm not mistaken, to "get retarded" is basically to get drunk.

Nothing new here. It's been going on pretty much since the earliest recorded music. I can't think of any examples. but I remember hearing about songs back in the 30s and 40s that changed lyrics to get past the censors or be more politically correct.

They also used all kinds of euphemisms and innuendo that everyone understood, but didn't technically violate any laws or social norms.

OMG! I thought I was going crazy, but I googled it and it looks like it was indeed originally recorded as "Let's Get Retarded", but the band had to change it to, "Let's Get It Started", so it could be played on the radio. Though the original version can still be found online.

Someone provided a link here to the original song. To me it was always "Let's Get Retarded". "Started" is just silly, because it could mean anything.
