For me fiction helped me out more than non-fiction books. I work in mechatronics and robotics and I find the classical fiction books to be more useful than the non-fiction self-help books. The self-help books are mostly just someone just telling you how to be successful, but never actually telling you how they became successful.
No, fiction and non-fiction are both great. Read whatever you like. There's a lot of enjoyable books in both categories.
And yeah, self-help books are a scam. Anything you can learn from a self-help book can be boiled down into a ten minute video or short essay. All the self-help I've ever needed is to exercise, eat healthy, smile, and touch grass.

People can read what they want, fiction, non fiction. As soon as people start trying to say one is bad the other good, they can go fuck themselves.
a good history book is great, equally a fiction book on most genres if well written is also great.
reading is so important, trying to justify one type is so fucking wrong
Lot's of things could be seen as being just a waste of time (ex. watching a film, listening to music), but so what? Why must we always use our time "productively"? I'd rather enjoy my life than work myself to death.

As much as life is a waste of time.
In other words this is a matter of opinion. I would say fiction stimulates the imagination. And a person's imagination can change the world. Look at how many astrophysicist will say they became one because of Star Trek.
Anything is a waste of time depending on your perspective
No. Tom Clancy wasn't. Also WEB Griffin.
