In Spider-Man (2002), Peter and MJ interacted quite a bit throughout the film. Not only that but they’ve known each other throughout childhood. My question; how did MJ not realize Peter was Spider-Man by his voice and other slip ups?
Tobey Maguire has a pretty distinct voice, easily recognizable. He has such a recognizable voice that I almost instantly recognized his voice in the movie The Boss Baby (2017). That being said, I questioned how MJ never recognized it herself. He talked to MJ in his Spider-Man persona each time he saved her and interacted with her; and each time he never once tried to disguise his voice. He talked to her in the same tone and way he would have if they’d bumped each other in the street. Not only that, he was also pretty careless with how he spoke to MJ. After saving MJ from the thugs in the the rain, he told her “ I was in the neighborhood “. He had said this exact thing just moments before the attack while he was out of costume.
Another time this was pretty prominent that he “knew” outside of her just being a bystander that he seems to always save, is when he called her by her name at the end of the movie when the Green Goblin had her hostage. He called her by her name, which if you think about it, he shouldn’t know if he were just a random hero who saves many people on a daily basis.
I could go on this more, but I’m probably overthinking it. What do you guys think?
