Why did Marvel make Spider-Gwen a love interest of Miles Morales, instead of giving Miles an original love interest?

Was Gwen not the original love interest of Miles Morales? I legitimately don't know the answer, but Google says he has been romantic with her, Kamala Khan, and Kate Bishop. The current fans actively reject both of those other characters and want to forget they exist, so it wouldn't make much sense from a marketing standpoint to push them.

I think they were trying to find something to bond them over like losing a loved one or fighting for what you believe in, etc. they back each other up.
